Topic: RE: My VBG story (surgery was in 1993)
I had VBG on Dec 13, 1999, Monday morning @ 6:00am. I lost 105lbs in 2 years, fast forward to now... I have put all but 40lbs back on. I agree the VBG of the 90's is not the long term solution that we had all hoped. I think 50% is the education that we received, and the other half is up to us.

Topic: RE: VBG or Lap Band?
I had VBG Dec 13, 1999, my starting weight was 262, I lost 105 lbs in 2 years. Fast forward to the year 2010, I have now gained back all but 40 lbs. VBG is not permanent, and nethier is banding ( my aunt and cousin are still several obese after 2 years of lap band).  I am currently waiting on insurance approval for bypass. I wanted bypass back in 1999, but the surgeon that I wanted to use did not do bypass back then. I wish I had been patient and explored other surgeons. I slightly regret having VBG, but if I didn't do it I wold be scared to even think about what I would weigh now.

Im in the same boat. I want the VSG but insurance won't pay for it. So I'm hoping to go down the VBG routs. I don't want a LAP-BAND, I want a permanent change. Read the VBG board and you will find out that it is the most used surgery out there. Plus it most closely resembles the VSG. I'm wondering if each Dr does it a little different? I'd like to have the vertical segment just like the VSG without removing the part that is stapled (like with the VSG).

We'll see.

I've contact Dr. Morazz and will also contact elariny.

Topic: VBG or Lap Band?
I think I already know the answer to my question but will ask anyway. My insurance will pay for Gastric bypass, gastric banding and/or Lap band. I don't love the idea of a lap band and I want a permanent change. So Im leaning towards the vertical gastric banding which is most similar to the VSG I wanted to get.

What would you recomend?

I'm intersted in replies you get.  I'm also looking into Elariny, because I am a revision & trust his for this higher risk.  I am not happy though with his fees. He is pretty much out of network for everyone, I'm told.  The price I need to pay his office before the surgery is $8k +

Topic: RE: 11 days and struggling
I was sleeved on 9/7/10.  For two days, I was on a liquid diet, with broth, sf jello and water.  I did add some apple juice, sf; until I saw the actual sugar percentage which was too high.

Then I went to cream of chicken or mushroom soup, plain hi protein greek yogurt, and EAS protein low carb shakes.  Love the shakes, and I purchase most everything at Wal Mart or Sams Club.

Last Wed, I went to pureed eggs with greek yogurt and little milk.  But after the second time; did not agree with me until last night.

I am going to try some Cream of Aspargus soup for dinner today.

Yes, taste buds change after surgery.  The first time, I ate cream of chicken soup the first time; it tasted like nothing at all.  The second time was better.  Just trial and error.

Hope it helps.

Hi Susan,
I had VBG in 1999. My experience is identical to yours. But, I am scheduled for lap band surgery on Oct. 18th. Dr. Michael Peters of Christiana Care thinks this will help me, along with the education & learning pre-requisite, as well as the support available. When I had the VBG, this was not available or required. I now feel like I have the tools & the power to be healthy & successful.

Christiana Care has an awesome program. Let me know if you need more info. I feel your pain.
