Is almost everyone having the RNY surgery instead???

There are hardly any comments on this message board compared to the MAIN board, and almost everyone there lists their surgery as RNY. It makes me concerned I may have made the wrong choice. Will I be able to lose as much weight as I need too? (approx 100# now). Will I eat too much (it seems easy to eat more than 1/2 cup!!). Although I eat MUCH less than I did prior to VBG, I may be eating too much sometimes. I can eat 1/2 to 2/3 of a TV dinner. Hmmm. 267/234/future goal: 135#

Marcia- I had my surgery in August and I have lost 71 pounds and am very happy with my decision to have VBG. I have looked at the message board for Aug surgery dates and I'd say I'm pretty much in line with what the RNY patients have lost except for maybe a few that are lucky and lose super fast. I was instructed to eat 2 oz after my surgery and I can tell you at this point I can eat more than that of most foods. I don't think you made a mistake. My surgeon doesn't even do the bypass because he said he had just as good of results with the VBG. Someday there may be a surgery that is more popular than RNY and it will be the minority. There are pros and cons to all surgeries. Just remember this is just a tool and if used properly you can't help but lose.

Hi Marcia, I had surgery 9/17/04. I was actually scheduled to have the RNY, but because my small intestine is too short the bypass could not be done safely. I am so glad I had the VBG instead. I rarely get nauseas and I don't have to worry about taking B-12 This is the best thing that has ever happened to me. I have lost 63 so far and I want to lose at least another 100. I have finally realized it's in my hands to make it happen. I too can eat more than 2 oz. I can eat almost a whole Lean Cuisine meal. Some days I eat more than others. Some days I make better choices than others and some days I work out harder than others, but you know what....I am doing it. I am eating better than I ever have before and I actually go to the gym and as a result I am losing weight! Try not to borrow trouble. Just do your best and use your tool as best you can and you will see the results. So far so good right Hugs, Sara 356/293/175

Hi Marcia and Ladies, I had the same worry, right before I had my surgery. It seems that there is so much more written on the RNY. In retrospect, I am so glad I had this surgery. I love that my anatomy is intact. I feel good about things, and am losing at a nice pace. I can't eat too much yet, but look forward to when I can fit a bit more in. I never wanted to drop it all at once, I just wanted to get rid of sleep apnea, insulin resistance, and that fat tired feeling. So, I'm happy to go bit by bit. I think the big key with this, is what you fit in the space. If you are doing lean cuisines, it sounds like you are not abusing it. I have noticed that this message board is not as active, and I'd love to hear from folks. I'd love to know what people do for meals, and get some suggestions. I am pretty much at eggs, cheese, and some soup right now. I am almost 2 months out. I had the VBG with sleeve where they also removed some of my stomach. Take care and don't worry! I think we made the right decision! Theresa 11/18/04 240/199/???

Hi everybody I also had the same concern. I just wasn't to thrilled with the side effects of the RNY. Like not knowing what I could eat from day to day and dumping and since I was more of a portion person than a sweets person, the VBG was just a better choice for me. I'm down 65 total pounds, I have 35 more until I'm at goal weight. I am confident that I made the right choice. My body thanks me everyday by not creaking and crackin everyday when I get out of bed. I have so much more energy and I have the desire to workout which is something I never had before. I can walk with my head up knowing that I am accomplishing a goal that I've been trying to reach since I was a pre-teen. Good luck to all of you on your weight loss journeys Jae 275/210/175

Hello, Please take a look at this site: www.gr-ds.com and go to the comparison of WLS. I had the VBG in 1985 and it was revised to the DS in 12/2003. Lyric

I had the VBG in Aug 1999. In the past two years, I have regained all the weight I lost. The x-rays show that my anatomy has returned to normal. I am now going back in for the RNY. For me, it is important to dump and have those side effects. It is still a tool but once you notice you are able to eat more than normal, resist and resist.

I had the VBG 6 years ago, at the time i did want the RYN because from all I had read about the two surgeries the Ryn's lost more weight, faster, and kept it off .. My doctor would not do the RYN so i had VBG, now six years later iam sch. for revision surgery Feb. 2.. Iam finally having my RYN. Sure I lost weight.. I lost 100 pounds in about 6 or 7 months with the VBG, I weight 315 at the time... Today I have been Struggling to stay around 225-230, i did get up to 240 last summer... I never got below 200 pounds... the weight lose stop after about 9 months and slowly i started to regain, at this rate i will be back up to 300 pounds again in a few years.. well Iam not going to let it happen.. Iam having the RYN... The problem is your pouch stretches... and the hungry pains come back again.. i can eat a ton of junk food, potatoe chips, popcorn, candy, soda, I can even eat 3 or 4 slices of pizza.. i can eat a whole meal then eat again 2 hours later.. just like the old days.. i had the scope test done, were they look inside your stomach.. which i need before i could have the RYN done, well the dr. said my tiny pouch isnt so tiny anymore.. it did hold less than 2 oz. now it holds about 12-14 oz. It does and Will stretch in time.. and You will learn what you can eat and eat alot of... things that you can chew up fine.. like Pretzels, popcorn... chips.. will go right thru the valve between your pouch and reg. stomach... and you can eat and eat.. Oh yea Bread is still hard for me to eat... No problem thru if its toasted good, same with Bagles.. toast them and i can eat them, with plenty of cream cheese... people say Its a Tool, its what you make of it, Its your Responsibility to Eat Right... Well if i could control what I eat, Eat Right.. Ect... I would have never been up to 300 pounds in the first place.. I can't ,..Why do I think the RYN will Work for me then? Because when they do the bypass part you do not absorb 1/3 of the calories you eat.. and your stomach is not just staple like VGB its cut and seperated.. and if you eat the sweets and fats.. You get sicker than heck.. I need that severe control , I will be forced to eat right and lose weight.. I need to lose 100 pounds.. and I will, I would be there now if my dr. did the RYN in the first place... My new doctor will not do VBG he said they fail.. maybe not in the first two years but he sees so many ppl that have gained all there weight back and more.. he was so surprised after 6 years i was 230 and not over 300 again..

Unfortunately, I'm not sure that RNY is the solution you're looking for. I am 18 months out from RNY and I can eat as much if not more than you describe. They ran some test on me and said "everything's normal" and my pouch is "intact". I don't get sick from sweets. There is no surgery that is going to be able to control your intake in the long run. We can all find ways to sabotage the benefits of our surgery if we choose. I'm not trying to suggest that you did anything to sabotage your surgery however I would hate for you to rearrange your body once again only to find yourself back in the same place you were a year later.

hello yes in time with either surgery you can eat more and more... RNY is a tool with a window, the window to lose weight is within the first 12 to 18 months following wls... after that your stomach (pouch has stretched and you can eat more.. its at this point ppl tend to gain weight back... you have to take those 12-18 months post op and try to lose the most weight you can... following a strict diet and directions from your doctor... you should be able to get down to a normal weight and if you follow your good eating habits you should be able to maintain your new weight.. I already had the RNY revision, and have been home from the hospital a few days now.. feeling good but sore, i gained 9 pounds after surgery with water gain, ivs, ect... i weight myself today and have lost 6 pounds... What happened with my VGB is...and i didnt know until the doctor did my RNY, My staple line in my pouch broke down and opened up so my pouch was running over into my regular stomach which let me eat more.. i believe now if it had not have failed i would have been able to get under 200 pounds and get to my goal weight of 120... hopefully now it will happen, and I know its not magic you do have to watch what you eat, exercise, etc..
