really intereted in vsg, but experienced doc elariny
hi! i'm from arlington, va and going to a seeminly endless round of wls seminars in the area. i decided this week to give the program at fairfax hosp a try -- dr. elariny. i know he does the vbg, but i'm really apprehensive about the procedure (and not sure my ins covers it) and wanted input from people who've had it.
are you glad you went with the vbg and not the vsg? any drawbacks? any info is appreciated!
thanks so much for your help!

Im in the same boat. I want the VSG but insurance won't pay for it. So I'm hoping to go down the VBG routs. I don't want a LAP-BAND, I want a permanent change. Read the VBG board and you will find out that it is the most used surgery out there. Plus it most closely resembles the VSG. I'm wondering if each Dr does it a little different? I'd like to have the vertical segment just like the VSG without removing the part that is stapled (like with the VSG).
We'll see.
I've contact Dr. Morazz and will also contact elariny.

I can only suggest that you research, research, research and ask questions like you are doing. I had VBG - Vertical Banded Gastroplasty in 1998. Most of the people I know who have had VBG do not have long term success. The first year of weight loss is typically good. Depending on how much you have to loose, you may or may not reach your goal weight as the weight loss really drops after about a year. I never did reach my goal weight, although I did a little more than #100. I wanted to loose another 40#.
It has all but 40# come back.
I am now seriously considering the Sleeve but am doing my homework. There weren't near the number of options or data available when I did my 1st surgery.
One other comment I am going to make is that just because your insurance won't pay for the surgery you feel is best for you- don't give up. Find the data to back your position and submit it to the insurance company. I know several who have done that and although it can be time consuming, it paid off. They did not want to be revisiting this same issue in 5plus years.
Good luck to you.
