What is the difference between Vertical Banded Gastroplasty and Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy ?
Sorry if this is a dumb question.

I'll try to help you out..I posted a question almost a week ago, and not one person could help me...

VBG, from what I understand it to be, is basically the LapBand, only with out the plug to go and refill every so often. Laparoscopic VBG (vertical banded gastroplasty) reduces the size of the stomach by vertically stapling a small pouch of the stomach directly below the esophagus, and inserting a non-stretchable band where the stomach is connected to the esophagus. The intestines are not cut or rerouted; however, the procedure significantly restricts the patient’s food intake.
VSG, again, from what I understand it to be, they actually remove a good part of your stomach 85%. See thisLink:  www.obesityhelp.com/forums/vsg/cmsID,8874/mode,content/a,cms /

I myself, am looking to have the VBG but I would like to know, if it would help curb my appitete.

no dumb question- VBG has been around for a few decades, lap band has pretty much replaced it essentially part of the stomach (the upper part ) is stappled off, then a band i put below that area

VSG is when about 80% of your stomach is cut, removed stappled, most of the part of the stomach that is removed contains the appetite increasing hormone grehlin, the removal of this area is thought  to keep appetite post surgery at bay.....

not many places do either of these surgeries but for opposite reasons
VSG because it is "new" not really has been around for >10 years as it is part one of DS
VBG because the band has replaced it

You also need to know that very few surgeons still perform the VBG because it has such an astonishingly HIGH failure rate.

I have had both surgeries. The VBG in 1985 with a 213 lb. weight loss and kept it off for 17 yrs. I threw up several times daily during this time. Two of my sisters also had it done within a month of me. One lost about 90 lbs. and never lost anymore. to this day she still can't eat and throws up daily. And still needs to lose another 75 lbs. The other sister lost so much so fast they had to undo hers at the time she weighed 88lbs. She had permanent nerve damage in her legs. I had mine undone in 2003 due to staples falling out into my stomach and causing an infection. I could never find things to eat that didn't make me sick, other than a bowl of cereal or a cookie.I regained to 244lbs and had VSG on august 11th. It's AWESOME !!!!! i've lost 24lbs. and no longer take insulin shots for my type 2 diabeties. So far nothing I've ate has made me sick. Everyone in my family thought I was crazy to even consider surgery again but I did alot of research and knew they had improved drastically since 1985. I LOVE MY SLEEVE!!!!

Im looking at doing the sleeve, so how does it work with these staples? Do we have to worry our whole lives if the will get lose? Does your stomach heal or do the staples have to hold it forever? Just trying to figure this all out. Glad your doing so well.
