Why so negative about the VBG?

Marisol,
I am glad your post was last on the list.  It left me with some hope.   I had my VBG back in Feb of 08.  So I am just short of a year.   My weight last january was 350, my weight at surgery on Feb 29th, was 294.  Yes I worked hard to get down that much before surgery, but I still feel the VBG has been a great decision for me.   Since surgery, I am downover 100lbs, over 160 all together.  People tell me that I am "results not typical" but again, this is a tool, and you have to use it.   I work out regularly (5 days a week) and I do endurance training.   One year removed from 350lbs, I ran a marathon.   All 26.2 miles.

I hope my surgery lasts, I plan on doing what is within my power to make it work.  I do get sick a few times a week.  But it is usually due to not chewing properly or eating when agravated.   I think that just makes me eat too fast.   I haven't been under 200 lbs since I was 13 years old, so so far so good.

Best to all,
Ron

Good to see people have success. VBG Oct 03. No complications. No big loss. Wasn't really given any real rules either. I was supposed to go to support classes after, but didn't. Probably a contributing factor to my lack of loss. It was just a hassel though. I am a suburb girl, and the classes required me to go to downtown and do the whole parking ramp thing. Just a hassel. I am visiting "the rules" now though, so hopefully I will have better progress.

I can understand how people would have problems with the meat thing. I am kind of lucky though. I was never much of a meat eater. I'm not a vegetarian, I just don't care for meat that much. I do miss salads. The VBG doesn't allow you to eat a large variety of healthy things. if you do, you have to chew like hell. If I can't chew it into nothing I spit it into a napkin. I have never thrown up. NEVER. But I am pyscho about chewing.

I didn't know about the no water for an hour before, or no water after, of no water during. I will try that and see what happens.  I think my problem is, I just don't like to excersize. I don't eat much at all. I drink tons of water.

Ive looked into the RNY, was actually supposed to have that one. Changed mind at last minute- with hospital gown and IV in. RNY is no cake walk either.

I just need to excersize. It's that easy! right!?

If only things were so easy! Good for you to be so disciplined with chewing!  I need to take a lesson!  I sometimes forget, but the band reminds me a little later! I didn't do the support group either because the nearest one is an hour away.  I do enjoy exercising, though!  I found that I'm kinda OCD with exercise, meaning I need to keep changing things up, or else I get bored, stuck in a routine, and quit. I dabble in a bunch of things, and actually found that doing triathlons is my greatest joy! You might want to check out some nearby "drop-in" classes or activities to see if you might like something.  Exercise is what keeps me sane, and keeps my weight steady.  I'm not as gung-ho about it as I used to be, simply because I don't want to get as light as I was.  I was too light at 160 lbs for someone 6'2" tall!  Very comfortable around 178-185.  Can't wait for warmth to get running!

I am hoping to have the VBG done at the end of this year or the begining of next year.  I'm so ready to change my life. And I have very good faith in my surgeon.  I went to his seminar and he seems like he is a very excellent surgeon. And He cares for his patients.  My only thing is everytime i exercise i get to the last exercise of the dvd for the cool down exercises and my legs feel like jello than they give out on me. Is that normal?  I Bought the dvd called The Biggest Loser Workout DVD. And I love it but i dont like when my legs give out on me.

I'm so glad Dr. Chua helped me decide to have the VBG, but like any surgery, they only work as well and as long as the person who has it. I worked very hard to be where I am today. Like I tell people in his seminar, I work at my surgery like it is another full time job.  It really consumes me and I am not about to let this fail for me.

As for exercise, I couldn't and didn't exercise before surgery, other than some walking. I had such bad body aches and pain that I didn't want to make it worse.  I am thrilled to be doing a half marathon in 2 weeks and have Dr. Chua to thank for getting me here.  Do what you can for exercise. Any better health you can put yourself into now will help in your recovery and goals later.  Good luck!  You've chosen the best surgeon!
