My story (cause Ann asked!!) (kind of long)
I had lap RNY on July 10, 2007. My highest weight was 305 lbs which I reached in March of '07. By the time I had my surgery, I had lost down to 287 lbs. I was very lucky in that I didn't have to fight my insurance company for approval. They approved right away even though I didn't really have any serious co-morbs at the time. My blood pressure was slightly elevated and I was borderline diabetic. Of course I had all the aches and pains in my joints and couldn't even dream of walking up a flight of stairs without feeling like I was about to die!!!
I have had absolutely no complications since surgery. The weight has literally fallen off and I couldn't be happier. My surgeon did not set a goal weight for me. He feels that anyone who loses 70-80% of their excess weight is a success. I set a goal of 159 lbs for myself simply because at 5'7" tall, that would put me in a "normal" BMI range, albeit at the very top of normal.
Today I tip the scale at 167 lbs. Only 8 lbs away from my goal. I'm sure if I would get my butt to moving more, I could easily meet that goal. However, I am not perfect and I do have my days where I eat things I shouldn't and I definitely don't exercise like I should. But when it's all said and done, I do feel like I am a success and even if I never see that 159 on the scale, it's perfectly o.k. I didn't have this surgery to have the perfect body. I had it to be healthy, to be able to watch my wonderful son grow into a fine man, and to have many long, happy, and healthy years to share with Scott.
So there you go, Ann, that's my story in a nutshell. I wish I had done this several years ago, that's how good I feel. To all the pre-ops out there, keep hanging in there and keep fighting. You are so worth anything you have to go thru to get this surgery if you truly want it. I am happy to answer any questions I can and to give others advice if I can. I may be an "OLDIE" but I'm definitely a "GOODIE" too!!!! LOL!!!
