Really Bad Night - The Answer - The ER

After my post this morning and with all the good recommendations to call my surgeon, I did after experiencing the same pain after one sip of a protein shake.  He listened to my symptoms and sent me straight to the Emergency Room.

Turns out I have a bad case of Pancreastitis.  I actually had to have the doctor explain to me what the Pancreas actually does and why it effects my tummy.  Anyway, the only reason they didn't admit me back to the hospital is because I begged and pleaded, and I am not vomiting yet,  and I have an appointment with my Surgeon on Thursday.  I now have a medicine cabinet full of meds to keep me busy until Thursday.

Thanks to all of you that said. "Call the Doctor"!  It was the right things to do.

Sweetie, I am so glad you called the doctor.  Yet another lesson for everyone to learn.

This actually brings up a topic for discussion.  Please allow me to use your situation for an example.  I never understand why so many people here don't even consider calling their doctor but will race to the computer to ask us what to do.  Please don't misunderstand what I'm saying here nor my intentions.  Yes, we want to know about each others experiences, but folks, come on...a phone call...a simple phone call, to the right place.  It's not hard.  It's not embarrassing.  If one of your kids was experiencing anything remotely similar to the kind of pain you describe, would you even hesitate to call a doctor??  Heck no!!  So why is it different for any of you?  WHEN IN DOUBT, CALL YOUR DOCTOR!!!  That's what they're for, for heaven's sake.

I hope I don't sound mean...I truly don't mean to be.  I just feel a need to point out the obvious.

Sharon, I hope you get to feeling much better quickly.  It sounds like you've had a dreadful few days.

Hugs!
Ann

I think what is Ann is that we are not sure if it is normal or not.  We have so much to deal with in the beginning that it all gets overwhelming.  Plus, we have all these extra emotions flying through us and I have had so many mysterious pains.  We just are not that confident yet with our new tool and the healing process.

For me, it makes me second guess myself.   It just makes me wonder if it is a real emergency or not.  I know it sounds crazy but I just wasn't sure.

Being able to post here and get response from those that are not new comers to this procedure, who have been there and experienced it, for me helps validate if I am being nuts or not.

If I hadn't gotten the responses, I may have tried to wait until my appointment with my surgeon on Thursday.  All this being said, I do agree with you.  When in doubt, call your doctor.  If you need a little push from your friends, post here and let them push you to do the right thing.

Thank you for all your support!

Well said, Sharon!  I keep coming back to the boards because I can lend a hand to so many others.  I am one of the farthest post ops that is still on here.  I am almost four years post op.  I stick around because of the friendships that I have made and the advice I can share!

I understand what you're saying.  It's very easy to start second guessing, as you said.  I know I did my share...still do sometimes.  And by no means am I even remotely suggesting that you or anyone else NOT  post questions or look for some guidance here.  Far from it.  I guess I'm thinking with my medic hat on rather than my wls hat...Tammy knows how I get...lol.  For me, personally, it just makes sense to call the doctor first.  Even if you don't actually speak to him, his staff if smart enough to know when to tell you that you're ok & when to bring the doctor into the picture.  I get worried about delaying medical attention because the result could be disasterous.  Too many times I've heard doctors say, "Gee, if she'd only called me sooner."  What can I say...I'm a worry wart...shoot me!! LOL

Hugs!

I had to smile when reading this.  "I never understand why so many people here don't even consider calling their doctor but will race to the computer to ask us what to do."  Neither do I, but I'm the one who had to go through three gall bladder attacks before seeing my doctor, and limped for over six months before I could be bothered to hobble in and get a prescription for anti-inflammatories.  For some reason, I just can't be bothered.  Yet, when my elderly cat got constipated it was me rushing to the vet as they were closing on New Year's eve to get her cleared out.

I guess it boils down to people are wierd.

Oh Sharon!  I'm so glad you're on the mend.  As a newbie myself I often come here or to a few individuals for advice to make sure what I'm experiencing is or isn't normal before I leap to call the Dr.  This is such a great forum with a mix of newbies and not as "newbies"!   Hope you continue to heal and good luck at the dr. tomorrow!!  Big hugs!

I am glad you called and were seen.  Sorry you ended up in the ER...but better to have an answer.  Please do keep coming here if you have questions.  As always...your surgeon is the best resource and you should call them but sometimes you just can't get to them!  I am always here for you...either on the boards, PM or you can call me.  You have the number!
