I told my supervisor, but did not tell the rest of the office. I was rather surprised when I returned and it seemed that everyone knew. I expected my supervisor to respect my privacy. In fact, I thought that he would have been legally bound to respect my privacy. It was not a problem, and everyone was supportive, but I was still surprised.
BTW, my doctor wrote a note for me and said abdominal surgery. However, the doc's letterhead said "Obesity Surgery Center", so there were no secrets there either.
