Dumping - a question for everyone

After 5 years, I still dump.  Like several others, I dump on sugar, fats and just to top it off, I became lactose intolerant after WLS.  However, my tolerance level is obviously higher than it was a couple of years ago.  But it's not that predictable.   Like others, I can tolerate more one day than the next.  It's worrisome, but does keep me on track better.  Ice cream is an extreme no-no for me, because of both the fat and lactose, even if it's sugar-free.  I dump so quick on that that I can feel it starting within several bites.  Consequently, I don't even like ice cream any more.  I do like a s/f popsicle every now and then (non-milk variety).   The s/f smoothies from Tropical Smooth Cafe are great, espensive but good and I haven't dumped on them yet.     The effects of too much fat in food are so bad that I VERY carefully choose what I get in a restaurant; otherwise, I'm going to be headed to the restroom in a very big hurry.  Trust me, I learned that lesson the hard way.  I enjoy eating out  now for the socialization, not so much the food.  I'm not being sanctimonious, just know what the danger is for me.

You asked the question, why did we first experiment or test the waters.  I don't remember the exact reason or thought, but I do recall it was around Christmas time and there were lots of "goodies" at the office.  Like you, I wondered if I would dump and what it would fee like.  It was about a year and a half after my surgery so I decided to test one bite....I didn't dump.  Because I was always an over-eater and have absolutely no will-power, it wasn't long before I tried one more bite and one more bite.  My personal advice:  Don't try  it.  It's much easier not to ever experiment than to quit again.  I'm an all or nothing kind of person.  I have a hard time moderating myself, so I usually just say "no".  But I'll be the first to admit that I do occasionally backslide, and most often, I pay the price.

There truly are lots of good things to eat that are WLS friendly.......search this and other website for good recipes and experiment a little in the kitchen.  Watch out for sugars, fats and white carbs and for the most part, you'll be okay.

Thank you for your response.  It really spoke to me.  I too struggle with the "just one more" complex.  That is what I'm most scared about in testing the waters.  I will try my best to keep on target and if the day comes when I actually find out great, but until then I'm just going to keep focusing low sugar and ride this horse as long as I can.  :)  Thanks again!

Hey Lauren, good to see ya on the 11th of Oct and sharing your table. I only had one episode of dumping and that was at Jackie's thingy back in June I think. I atee some of the desserts that someone brought and thought it was sugar free but apparently not. I got asll the classic symtoms on that and it was not a good feeling. Since then and now 5 months post-op I haven't experienced it again on anything I have eaten, so that is good. At any rate, you don't want to do this routine.. Take care, Jim

Well, I am only 2 days away from being 2 months post-op, so I haven't had a lot of experimenting going on.  But I did have a mild case of dumping on peanut butter.  Not sure why since it had less sugar then my milk does, but it made queasy and sleepy.  The Nut said my body just wasn't ready for pb yet, but that it will be one day, which is good because I love pb!!!

Even though I am still early on post-op, I have tested the waters a little by accident.  I got one of those bowls of cereal not realizing how much sugar was in it, but I didn't have any problems.  So far I seem to tolerate everything, with the exception of peanut butter.  Although, I do get food stuck at least once a week.  Its always my own fault, eating too fast and usually I can get it to move along on its own.  Its usally eggs, so I have cut back on eggs and just eat them when I am at home on the weekends, so I can take my time.  I am looking forward to moving onto solid foods again and I just have to make sure that I go slow and chew really well.
