Dumping - a question for everyone

I guess  you could say it was emotions & a craving.  At the reception for my grandmothers funeral (11 months from my surgery) I saw my fav. chocolate cake, now admittedly I only had two bites at that time but I didn't dump so I kept pushing the envelope.  Also had issues with family not wanting sugar free desserts & such so it was just easier to do regular.  I am sure that there are some people who are strong enough to do one piece a cake a year or something similar.  I am not.

Interesting question. For me, it isn't just the high sugar, fat, grease. I dump off of healthy foods as well with natural sugars. I may eat something today such as fresh fruit and I'll still dump. A week from now I may eat it again and it will have no side effects. Its trial and error. To this day my pouch still works. We ordered pizza for dinner for the buggas, my nephews and neighbors boy. I did eat a couple bites of one, sauce and cheese on another and dumped. It was the sauce. It is very high in sugar and still almost 6 years post op my pouch works. In my personal opinion and from everything I've read and learned almost everyone dumps its just a matter of when. I have made choices knowing I will most likely dump from what I am eating. **** cream, watermelon etc) However, I say no to so many things because its just not worth how I feel afterwards.

tomato sauce scared me so much at first.  I couldn't find a variety low enough in sugar in my opinion.  ONe day I finally just said, I guess I have to find out, the nutritionist office said unless I was consuming bowls of it I should be fine.  So I dipped a bit and found I have no problem.  Then again, I've never been a sauce girl so I really only put a dab of it for the flavor.  I always took my pizza "light on the sauce".  :)

Good AM.  I rarely dump, but it does happen.  One sure thing to make it happen for me is any type of cereal in cold milk.  I eat oatmeal almost daily made with skim milk instead of water and heat it and am fine but if I try to eat cold cereal and milk...forget it!  I, like Kat, can be fine with something one time and then the next time I will dump on it.  I know what to stay away from.  I can and do consume sugar.  I know where my limits are on most occassions.  I am an unlucky one in that I do not really dump on much.  It is a blessing in a small way but a curse in others.  I do know that my pouch still rules and my tool still works and I am grateful for what I have been blessed with.  Congrats to you for not testing the waters!

I would get so frustrated if one day I could eat something and the next day not.  Cereal is a bone of contention for me.  I loved cereal pre-surgery, but obviously can't do it the same sugary brands now so it's not even worth it.  I've tried maybe three types of low sugar high protein cereal and they all get a big BLECHHHH!!   Also the combination of liquid and solid at the same time is strange to me now.

I'll second the cereal thing. I just don't know what it is about it... but last week, I had a prepackaged bowl of Cheerios (one of the little bowls, like you'd get at school or something). You know, CHEERIOS, the ones that are low in SUGAR? Dumped. I could not believe it.

I think post-ops having trouble with cereal is the rule rather than the exception. I have tried various kinds, from low, low sugar (Cheerios) to higher sugar, with the same result always. Since I haven't found a cereal that's high enough in protein for what I want anyhow, I just steer clear of it altogether.

I don't think I have dumped yet.  I truly practice the moderation thing though.  I don't really eat too much of what I am not supposed to (though I have to have chocolate a couple days out of the month).  I have not had any of the dumping symptoms that people describe.

My worst "side effect" is food getting stuck.  It is usually chicken that I am eating for lunch as a left-over from the night before.  It is terrible.  I pace around the house until it finally gets down.

I too have trouble with chicken.  I went from an only white meat girl to and only dark meat girl.  It is moister.  Oh and leftover meat is a no-no for me.  I just can't do it the second time around.  We started breaking up our family packs into small portions so that we wouldn't have leftovers anymore.  Or if I do make an extra chicken thigh it is for Nate for the next day, I will eat something different.

Hi Lauren,

Early out, I dumped on anything and everything. I remember once when I was about 3 months post-op, I thought it would be a fantastic idea to make a protein shake with milk, SF vanilla ice cream, and protein. It did taste pretty good, but it was something about that combination, and a very few minutes later I was lying in bed thinking I was going to die.

These days, things manifest themselves a bit differently. As time has gone on, I have found that I'm able to tolerate sugar a little more, but that I still might pay for it. For example, if I have a few chocolates after dinner... forget about it. I'm asleep on the couch 20 minutes later.

There have also been times that I've had something with a bit too much sugar, and nothing appeared to happen at all. That is, until a couple hours later, when I get dizzy and confused and nauseous. My parents are diabetics, and I've tested my blood sugar when this has happened and I've had access to a meter ... it's gone as low as about 50. I keep glucose tablets next to my bed because of this, though I don't need them very often. At my 2 year appointment with my surgeon, I asked him about it, and he called it "late dumping". (I have also heard 'reactive hypoglycemia' but that's essentially the same thing)

I also dump on fat... rather if I eat something too high in fat, I can... tell. The fat appears to pass through unprocessed. It's gross. This has only happened to me once or twice, always after some kind of barbecue.

Congratulations with having been able to resist testing the waters. I feel you're better off not knowing. Nothing bad can come from avoiding refined sugar like the plague.

I would have thought that to be a yummy "float" but bummer on it not turning out well.

I've heard so much about the drowsy effect of dumping.  Like Joe said, I have read stories of people who use it's side effect to combat a sleep less night.  Perhaps I should have a big honking piece of carrot cake on hang in case I'm not sleeping well  ;)  Just kidding.

I did have a conversation with my mother and told her that should I want to officially find out.  I WILL be picking something absolutely fabulous.  I'm not going to feel like dying over a lollipop or something like that.  I actually would sit down to a slice of carrot cake.

Speaking of, I really need to whip out the recipes I found for a SF version and give it a go, so I can get that nagging question out of my head.  I think if I could have carrot cake again I wouldn't think about it so much.  I did have carrot cake at Melinda's wedding and I SWEAR, I nearly passed out on the floor when they told me what it was AND that it was sugar free.  HOORAY for specialy bakers!  :)
