Allergy testing on an 8 yr old..... long with pics
is nothing other than pure hell! The morning started off way early for him, me, heck, all of us. We had to be at the allergist at 7 for his appointment. We met with the doctor, felt like we were being drilled with all these questions and had a mini physical. Then it was back to the "lab" for the real torture. Bobbi, the nurse was great! She really did an excellent job, as great as she could with a screaming 8 yr old to take care of.
Time for testing. It was skin ***** testing to start. They did 75 ***** tests over his back. He screamed, more and more but Bobbi whizzed through all 75 *****s in less then 3 minutes. Impressive. Then we wait.
She comes back and because of how he reacted to many of the tests, we have to do intradermal, shots under the skin. Twelve of them. So we wait again. She comes back and he's reacted funny to some so she needs to do 4 more intradermal shots. Ugh!
Finally all the poking and sticking, we are done. The reports are being read over and we wait, again, for the doctor. When it is time to meet with him, we come to realize just how much Cameron is allergic too. Many different trees, grass, 4 different types of mold, dust, dust mites, ragweed, a few foods and even ****roaches. Not really sure why they test for that! Alot of changes are gonna have to be made but... Finally, after 5 1/2 hrs there, a total of 91 sticks from sharp objects, we know why he's so sick all the time. And he ended up with bruises all over his arms and his back looking like this....
Oh I'm sure things could be so much worse! But honestly, watching him go through this today, was the hardest thing I've had to do. Hopefully the new meds will work and we won't have to go ahead with our next option, twice weekly allergy shots. Thanks for reading!

Poor child! Sure this was torture for him and you. Im glad of you being a proactive parent. I never got these test until I was grown and out of the home and finally got diagnosed and got some help. Probably would have avoided alot of sicknesses as a child if we had known.
Hope he is all healed up soon and is on his way to a happier healthier future.

My son went through the exact same thing when he was 7, he's now 9. I didn't realize he was allergic to so many things( in addition to his asthma) like the grass, oak trees , dog and cat hair, dust, mice and roaches and another tree that's slipping my mind, but I'm glad we found this out early. I'm just thankful he doesn't have to go through those series of allergy shots. Take care.
