Misty,

Welcome to the boards and well said.  I have been fortunate to have  put my transfer addictions to good use.  I emerged myself  into exercise.  I have had my moments with other things as well as most people on this board but I have a great support system in my family and friends.  Kat is invaluable to me!

Melinda,
Sorry, I ready Melissa's post and confused it with yours.  I meant to also comment that Melissa's note about serious personal soul searching and Tammy's many posts about her journey have been so open and honest that I can truly see the struggle that some want to minimize.

No one above mentioned this part of the issue but it has to be included to get a full picture of transfer addiction, prescription meds for pain.  I know of a WLS patient who is always having some medical issue that requires pain meds.  At first I didn't think about it, but after a while it began to dawn on me that everytime they was supposed to be recovered and getting off them, something would occur that required a visit to the ER or a doctor's office and more pain meds.  By itself, it doesn't seem unusual, but when you look at the whole picture - they also drink and smoke to control their food intake - you have to wonder "is this an unrecognized transfer addiction?"  If a WLS patient has several doctors they can get meds that the others are not aware of unless the patient tells them.  I think this is also an example of the actor that Natalie talks about above.

Hey Misty,

First, welcome to the boards! Next, scripts for pain is actually more common a transfer addiction than many think. Its absolutely needs to be incorporated into the big picture. The situation in which you've posted here is not uncommon and I'm coming to learn quite a bit more about addiction and its various entities and its another avenue that needs to be pursued. I think there needs to be a medical connection from doctor to doctor caring for a patient so that they are made aware of what the patient already takes. I will say that THANK THE LORD I have a wonderful pharmicist who truly cares about what scripts a patient is taking and their side effects and how mixing some of them can have detrimental results. In addition, I plan to incorporate this into a proposal I'm working on. I plan to bring this up as a topic of discussion with my docs and surgeon's office. Thanks for your input. Its truly valued and appreciated!

Once again it has been months since i posted, and weeks since i have even been on the site.  I feel like an addict who avoids all reminders of her problems until it gets so out of hand she has to go for help!  Anyway, your posts are profound when i think about where i am currently at.  My addictions, food addictions have reared their ugly head badly in the past two months and as a result i have gained 10-15 pounds.  I have been angry with myself and am trying to get back on track, it is hard.  Regardless, i know i need to be on here daily because the first year or so after surgery i faithfully visited and it seemed that the constant reminders and stories helped keep me grounded and straight.  WEll, enough of this, i am glad i am back.

Lorraine,

WELCOME BACK!!!!!!!  I have been thinking about you a lotlately and I am glad to see you posting again.  You have my number...call anytime.  I am here for you sweetie.  You are at the point in your journey where gaining back 10-20 pounds is normal.  It is ok.  If it bothers you then get back to the basics.  You can do it if you set your mind to it.  I am looking forward to seeing you post more often.
