HELP!!! We have recently started up a support group for surgical weight loss, BUT we are really struggling for topics!!!  We have people coming who are going to different areas for the surgery, because there are no local bariatric surgeons. This means diets, pre-op, post op's are different. Any ideas would be much appreciated!!!

If you want to become an OH Support Group Leader the training is fairly easy - free  - and they even have topics and agenda's all written up if you want to use them on their exclusive Leader Board. I can give you more details if you want some.

Otherwise some popular topics are transfer addiction, weight regain, back on track, vitamins, blood tests, label reading, importance of drinking water, holiday eating, portion control, exercise, calorie control, carbohydrates, self esteem, grazing, emotional eating to name but a few......

You can always PM me for any other information you are seeking....... :-) I will be happy to help you.......

At our support group meeting, we start with a lesson from our leader (about 10-15 minutes), then we go around the room and introduce ourselves and tell where we are at in our weight loss journey. Then the majority of the time is spent in open conversation. The floor is open to those scheduled for surgery 1st to ask questions, then to the ones considering surgery. The conversation just flows.

Also, I do not live too far from Pelham. I'm near Martinsville. My family is from NC (near Stoneville) and my maiden name is Vernon. I wonder if we are related.

See ya, Penny

That's wild!!! I wouldn't be surprised. My husbands family was from Madison, and surrounding areas. His name is David and his Dad's name was Clyde....Wouldn't that be neat!
I really want this group to be a success but it's so hard to get it of the ground!

I don't know alot of my fathers side of the family. I was raised by my mother only. My father's name is James and he has a twin brother named Johnny. My grandfather and grandmother was George and Grace Vernon. Do you know them?

My husband doesn't know those names so who knows? His mom and dad are both deceased so there's nobody to ask....guess we'll never know!

Jackie covered most of it.  We have a lot of guest speakers at our meetings.  There is usually a Q and A with a surgeon, a discussion/topic, sometimes with a guest (someone from a gym or a personal trainer, plastic surgeon, dietician, therapist, etc.) and then an open forum time for whatever is on the mind of the people attending.  Every group is different.  You have to find what works for you and your group.  Congrats on stasrting one.  It is important for all of us to have someone else to turn to!
