That cough syrup is the D E V I L!!! I ended up with a nasty cough that actually made me pull a muscle in my chest so the ER doc prescribed a robtussin with codeine in it to help. Well after 1 dose... Not even having time to get into my system... I KNEW! As soon as I swallowed it, I was like "OMG, what have I done?" For the rest of the evening, I laid in bed, with an aching in my stomach. Every time I drank, it hurt worse. Anything in my stomach made it hurt worse. Then there was the hot flashes and sweats. LORD!!!!

So I called my surgeon's office and left a message explaining what happened and for them to call me back. Well those that know me, know that I have NO patience. So I began googling and researching and calling the pharmacy. Turns out that there is a diabetic cough syrup, "Diabetic Tussin" at Walmart. It is 100% sugar free. So when the surgeon's office called back, finally, I told them about my find and they were thrilled that I had found that.

So to all that may ever need cough syrup, remember that is has sugar in it and can or will cause you to be all blah. There is an alternative!!!

ETA: that while it may be sugar free, it is also THE MOST DISGUSTING LIQUID MEDICINE I HAVE EVER TASTED! BLAH X 3

Oh, gosh, that happened to me early out too because I forgot that simple things like that have sugar. I just got over a devil of a cold myself and still almost forgot! Hope you are feeling better! I myslef had a small dumping episode today at work  because I thought I could get away with eating a bunch of gingersnaps that I didn't even want and I mindlessly ate at my desk. They are low-sugar and I *thought* I could get away with it. Next thing I knew, I was flushed, gassy, sweaty, tummy loud and grumbly and I had someone coming to sit at my desk within a half-hour to go over procedures!!!! I was doubled over hoping to high Heaven that at least the audible grumbling would stop!!! And of course he is the cutest guy in the office!! I feel better now, but I still do sometimes need that reminder that the pouch (Mrs. Nesbit) rules!!!

Yes, Nellie ( my pouches name, named after the whiny girl from Little house on the prairie ) was NOT happy with the medication. I completely did not think about the sugar or sugar alcohols but am so glad I made this find at the Walmart. Hope you are doing well. Miss talking to you and when things calm down, we should do lunch! Hugs to you!

I knew,I knew...but only cause my mom is a diabetic and I used to buy it for her!  I thought all diabetics or former diabetics knew of this stuff.  I know they told us about it in one of her education classes.
I am glad you were proavtive and researched yourself.  It definately shows the committment you have to your new lifestyle.  Kudos to you!

There is a "tussin" type cough capsule that works really well, too.  It is available by prescription, and I don't know why doctors don't prescribe it more often, but I always ask for it because, like you, I can abide the taste of syrups with our without syrup (yuck!).   It will make you sleepy, but so do any of the cough syrups with codeine,  which is the suppressant involved.

By now, I hope you're on the mend.  Take care..............Gail

I knew because I was diabetic before surgery but I thought it was the nastiest tasting stuff! I prefer capsules to syrup!  Sorry you had to learn the hard way :-(

Hey Theresa,

Hope you are feeling a lot better today. What ER did you go? Did the doc not know you've had WLS? Keep in mind moving forward we have to be extremely proactive on OUR on defense when it comes to meds and treatments. We are given a list of things we should and should not take. Its best to refer to it always. Get better!

Hugs.......
