standstill

Hi Everyone!

I had my RNY on May 12, and have lost a total of 49 lbs so far...which is fabulous, my concern is that for the past 14 days I have gained and lost 5 lbs.  So right now I am exactly where I was 14 days ago!

I realize that I will hit  plateaus, but was just disappointed that it happened so quickly.  I feel like I am NEVER going to start losing again, and I am getting kind of  depressed.  Has anyone else experienced this so soon after surgery?

help?

Christine...

Hi Yes this happens, stay off the scales for 2 weeks drink all your water and protien and you will start losing again, you are going threw losing inches and that's doesn't show up on the scale. It suck when this happens but it will pass if you are eating what you should be. Hang in there!  49 lbs in 2  months it GREAT.

Christine,
First let me say congratulations on the 49 pounds. This is a great acomplisment, and is indeed fabulous.
I want to share with you from my experience that platueaus do not happen until you are further out, say 6 to 8 months out . Platueaus can last for a month of so ..
What you are experiencing could be water weight or shifting of your body weight.
Sounds like to me you are experiencing a stall . Your body is really wanting to step back and take a break and realize what is going on . You also had anethesia , and your body will need to find time to heal from this as well .

I tell many to up your protein , water and change up your exercise routine . This should restart your weightloss .
You will start loosing again . This is so common after surgery. Do not loose hope .
Just stay focused and know that you are still on your way to complete success !!

Hugs,

Natalie

Not to worry.  You will have these breaks/stalls along your journey.  Your loss so far is amazing.  Try to stay focused on the big prize and not the small steps along the way.  It's easy to stumble into depression when we focus so much on that scale moving every day.  I do it myself.  I admit i weigh everyday but have done fairly well to not be alarmed if a few days go by without any results.  So far, I've been fortunate and only had about two one week stalls where I saw the scale not moving.  Just keep up the good work, refocus those depressed thoughts and keep LOVING YOUR NEW LIFE!!

Hey Christine, I had my surgery on April 30 and like you hit a little halt. I only lost like 3 lbs in about 3 or 4 weeks or so and on July 14 I weighed myself and had lost a few more. This past Friday was my 3 month check up and had lost 15 1/2 lbs in less than 2 weeks.

So while halting will happen, it will pick up again. I did what others suggested. I started to eat a bit more, because at the time, I was only consuming 1/4 - 1/2 of the calories that the drs wanted me to take. I upped my water and changed my exercise. Now, when I don't go to gym, I walk around the neighborhood.

Remember that you are you. What happens with someone else may not necessarily be how it will happen for you. Even though the scale may not move, I am sure you are dropping inches. Take a pair of shorts or a top that were a bit snug and try them on? They may fit. I had a pair of shorts that at surgery time, I couldn't fit them over my hips. Now, not only can I wear them, (with a belt) but without one, they fall completely down. And when else have you lost 49 lbs in 2 months and it stayed off? Be proud of what you have accomplished and just be ready for it to be even better. Give yourself a break. Remember, ya did just go through major surgery!! Good luck!

Don't sweat it too much. I made my goal at 7 months. Had a ton of stalls along the way...but even now, I can float 5 lbs. like it's nothing. Heck, I float 5 lbs. sometimes in the same day. Your body (like all of ours) is completely insane right now.

Focus on how the clothes fit and how your body feels. They are a more accurate indicator of progress.

I had weight loss surgery. I did it the easy way.

I know how frustrating a stall can be.  I just hit my first stall.  On Monday I hit an overall of 80lbs last and 41lbs since surgery.  The next day I got on and gained 2lbs!!!  I about died.  The following day I was down 1lb. I stayed there all week!

I started getting down, thinking this is all I am going to lose.  I messed up some how.  I had to talk to myself, it is a stall, my body is in shock and wanting to hold on to every ounce it can, I need to change things up.  I also started thinking positive and thinking about how far I have come since surgery.  I am wearing 26/28 very comfortabley.  I can go into Target and buy that size right off the rack.  Usually it is to small and smaller 26/28.  The clothes I have not been able to wear with the tags on them, I can wear now.  I have gone down 1 size in shoes!!!  OMG, the new shoes I had bought in my old size are to big.  I am not on diabetes medication anymore!!  Just by that 41lbs lost and overall of 80lbs!!

I finally got clearence to go to the gym.  My first day was Friday.  Yesterday i stepped on the scale and I was down 1 pound!!  I am back to the weight I was on Monday!!

Yesterday I went to the gym.  I pushed in a lot more water.  I drank about 96 oz yesterday.  I had over 100g of protien in supplements and upped my calorie intake slightly to compensate for the workout.  I got on the gym this morning, I am down 3lbs since yesterday!!

These do happen, try to change things around.

Yes those stall & plateaus are very normal.  Your body is trying to figure out what is going on, the fat cells are disappering.  They can happen at any time after surgery.  Just keep following the rules and working that tool.  Are you getting in enough water?  I noticed early out from surgery that if I didn't get my water in like I was supposed to that my weightloss would slow or pause.  Try adding more water, protein, and up your exercise some.  Also watch those inches, I always dropped inches when my body was stalling.  You have done fabulously so far, don't let it get you down.

Hey Christine!

Pesky lil' stalls! Their normal and common and a few things to keep in mind is that they DO happen, they happen every so often, they can last for a few weeks to a month or more at a time, every 4 weeks or so our bodies get bored with the same ole same ole so we gotta change things up and they WILL break. So, up your protein, make sure you're getting in the best fluids and as much as possible, change up foods and step it up in the exercise department. ALL of us have experienced this and we're rootin' for ya! Keep us posted! CONGRATS on the 49 lb so far

All best!
