I have started taking the B-12 shots and they give me sooo much energy for about 2-3 weeks. I only take it once a month but my need to cut it in half and get it twice a month to keep my energy level up. Low iron is what causes anemia. It means you have poor blood and if you ever donate blood they check your blood first and if you show being anemic they will not except your blood because it is considered poor. I suffer from this as well. I am close to being considered anemic. Before my surgery my iron blood level was 53...not great but ok. When I had the blood work up after my 6 - 8 weeks after surgery my iron level had dropped to 19!!!??? This is very bad! I now take Vitron-C, it is high potency iron with vit-C in it, easy on the stomach with less constipation effects. My doctor also advised me with my iron being so low to start eating some kind of Jerky. It can be pretty expensive for no more than you get in a bag but I have been eating the hell out of it. If you think you have iron problems try the pill Vitron-C and some jerky. Also potted meat has alot of iron in it if you like it. I like mine with saltines. Not everyone likes potted meat though because it is like "mystery meat in a can"....lol

about blood donation ... My husband is a regular donor (something like two gallons or more) and he tells me people who have had weight loss surgery can never donate again. It's hard enough to keep our levels up as is. Thanks for recommending the supplements and making me think about jerky again. I haven't tried jerky yet but it might be time to get brave.

There is anemia and pernicious anemia. Anemia has to do with your iron levels and pernicious anemia has to do with your B12 levels. Blood tests will tell you which is the problem. Craving strange things is usually termed pica and that is usually the anemia associated with low iron levels. Your hemoglobin, serum iron, serum ferritin, TIBC and % saturation should be checked. If possible, avoid iron in the form of ferrous sulfate which is one of the more common ones out there for sale. It can be hard on the digestive tract and ours is delicate to begin with. I was taking the Vitron C (ferrous fumerate) since very early post-op. It is a good iron and was recommended by my hospital's nutritionists. Each is 66 mg of elemental iron. I switched to Vitalady's Tender Iron a few months ago to try to get my levels up by taking a form that is smaller in the number of miligrams per tablet so I could make finer adjustments. I take more physically of them since they are each a lower number of milligrams but they are soft enough to chew and do not taste bad when chewed with a chewable Vitamin C. My labs made a nice jump. Good luck, Kathy
