My surgery is scheduled for tomorrow morning and today I have a cold - sore throat, stuffy/runny nose, sneezing, general brain fog. I called my surgeon's office and they said there should be no problem. Has this happened to anyone else? Do you think it affected your recovery? I'm a bit nervous about this. And, of course, with the brain fog, I can't seem to concentrate on or remember anything. I'm trying to make up a list of what to bring to the hospital and to make sure I have what I need for when I return. Does anyone have any suggestions? I just can't seem to think clearly!!! grrrrrrr!!!

Hi Julie - I had a bit of a cold and a huge cold sore just before surgery - and they still went ahead. It didn't affect my recovery because I had so many other things to think of I forgot about it. They will only not operate if it is affecting your breathing or you have chest congestion. And the drugs they give you make your cold feel like nothing at all..... and after they take your pain pump away the very next day, they crush your pain medication - here is a tip because it is the most god awful taste - ask them for a sugar free popsicle first and freeze your mouth before you swallow the pain medication..... you don't need to eat the whole thing - I hardly ate any of it but when I took the pain med I couldn't really taste it..... - Things you should take would be - as far as I can remember: - Your own sleepwear for after surgery - dressing gown and slippers - for walking - Toothpaste and toileteries - although they did give us a bag of them but not everyone used to get them so just to be on the safe side - a good book - although I never even opened mine - lip saver - hand cream - if you suffer from dry skin - cellphone or phone card for out of area calls - list of people you may want to call - after anesthetic you may get some brain fog and forget numbers - I did - day clothes to go home in - your own pillows if that will make you more comfortable That is about all I can remember that I took. I actually shared a room - I had surgery just before they went to all private rooms so there was always plenty to talk about and I socialized quite a bit so I was never bored.... but when you have a room to yourself you have some quiet time for a book or to watch TV.... Good luck for tomorrow - I am sure you will do just fine - the best is yet to come! Talk with you on Wednesday Jackie

Great ideas Jackie! Thank you. I wouldn't have thought of bringing my own jammies. I figured they would want us in hospital gowns. Good idea with the popsicle and crushed meds! Should I bring shampoo - will I be able to shower there? - Or will that have to wait for a few more days?

Yes you will be able to shower and wash your hair - I started the next day so I could wash the anesthetic out of my hair... Good luck and I am thinking about you! Jackie

Good luck tomorrow and I will be praying for you and thinking about you. Just try to stay calm everything will be ok a little cold will not hurt you as long as it is not in your chest that is when it could stop your surgery. Where are you having your surgery and what time? If we can do anything please feel free to just ask and we will see what we can do.

Oh, thank you for your offer. My surgery is scheduled for 8:00 am at Potomac Hospital. Drs. Halmi and Tran are my surgeons and I have the greatest confidence in them.

Best of luck to you Juli, As far as the "cold symptoms"... I had them on one of my plastic surgeries, and couldn't believe how much better I felt the next morning, regarding the conjestions, etc.. I think it was the oxygen. You should never comprimise your health, so be forth-right with your surgeon.. tell him/her your symptoms.. and heed the advice. I pray your surgery goes off without a hitch! If it is post-poned, know that it is in the interest of your health, and deal with it... with a reschedule.. easier said than done, i'm certain. As far as what to take to the hospital.. I could give you a list, but honestly, I didn't use a thing on "said" list. They will provide you with what you need, whatever it is. Again, best of luck! Wendy
