Your Favorite Snack?

I will be 3 yrs postop in February and am finding that maintenance is sometimes a major struggle. I bounce around with 5 lbs. up and down :bounce: and would actually like to lose 5 more pounds and get down to 149. I am currently on coumadin until March as a preventatve measure due to the PE I had following my Abdominoplasty in August. I have found that since being on the coumadin I have been having even more problems keeping at a stable weight. Main reason being I can no longer eat salads or green leafy vegetables---when I try them my INR levels soar--causing me to have to increase my coumadine dose as well as take Lovonox shots until the numbers are back in line. ( I will be SOOO glad when I can come off the coumadin and eat a salad without worrying about the repercussions) As 2007 begins I am trying to "tighten up" on my food intake--making better (higher protein/low sugar) food choices. I am in a rut when it comes to snacks. I even tried NOT eating them but found myself voraciously hungry at mealtime--so much so it was hard to eat slowly and actually enjoy my meal. Nutrition at Portsmouth strongly suggested that I add back a snack mid morning and mid afternoon. So.. my question to you is........what is your favorite snack???? Thanks in advance for sharing ~~~ Angel on your shoulder

Hey sweetie! My favorite snack is PEANUTS. I'm weird like that. They make me feal nauscious 90% of the time, but i love them. Of course, if I was in it for the nutrient/smart answer, I'd have to say "mix a protein drink".. I know how hard this is. Best of luck sweetie! Wendy

Thanks Wendy I do love nuts. My favorite is cashews--not exactly one of the best of the nut family. I sometimes eat mixed nuts and get a good crunch as well as a variety of tastes. Thanks so much. Angel on your shoulder

Peanuts are my favorite "healthy" snack too. At PMS time the snack monster still gets me sometimes. I fix the small snack baggies of peanuts to take to work because i will grave on the can all day if i have it in front of me. Cheese cubes was a favorite til I had stomach issues. Some use beef jerky chips but I just cant stomach those. Best wishes in getting your health in order. Is celery on your no no list w/ coumadin. That helps w/ the crunch desire i have but dont know if u can have it. Shannon

Nuts! Macadamia, smoked almonds and pecans are my favorite. I eat them all the time. They fill me up and have the "good Fats" in them. Since I lack fat in the rest of my diet, it's a good way for me to keep my skin and hair from drying out. I think this is why a lot of us have those issues after surgery. I spent the first 6 months post-op with itchy, dry skin. Since I started eating nuts, I don't have that problem. Correlation? Maybe! My other favorite snack in Soy Crisps. I miss crunchy stuff, so I consider it my new "potato chip" so to speak. It's a crunchy protein snack that satisfies. Jane

Hi Jane ~~ I used to eat soy crisps -- in fact I ate them as snack for about 6 months, got tired of them and went on to cottage cheese and pineapple--which I am now totally burnt out on. I also love a good crunch--think I will give them another try. Don't know why I didn't think of trying them again. That's why I LOVE this board---sometimes I can't see the forrest for the trees. Blessings ~~

I have issues with low blood sugar so I hae to add in a mid morning and an evening snack. Some of my favs include string cheese, peanuts, Adkins Chocolate Chip granola protein bar, and Quaker soy chips. Hope you find something that works for you. Courtney

Ohh do I hear you on this issue..I too am on coumadin ..no longer on lovenox right now..but it's always one test that makes me take them agian.I actually liked being in the hospital last time cause they had me on heprin gave me belly sime time to rest from the needles. The no "greens"is a killer..but there are some you can enjoy..like a salad use ice burg lettuce I guess there isn't as much vitamin K in it..at least thats what my nut said to me.I miss brocolli alot ;( I don't handle lactose very good so it's been hard to have that mid day snack if needed..but I usually go for a few peanuts..or this dip I make which has a good amount of protein in it..

Hi Naomi ~~ The few times I tried iceberg -- my INR level showed it. So--I am trying like heck to stay away from all of it. I just want to get through this 6 month period and hopefully after that--I will once again be able to eat a salad. And, yesss i also miss Brocolli. Had a good level this week in spite of falling asleep and missing a dose. whew! Thought for sure I would have to do the shot thing. I lucked out for this week. What kind of dip to you make? Would be interested in the recipe. Angel on your shoulder
