Just heard from the surgery center that when I get my sleeve on Monday, that the surgeon is planning on taking the gall bladder out.  Is this normal?  Can anyone give me an explanation as to why this would be normal procedure?  Thanks for your help.

My surgeon did not remove mine, but my two sisters had theirs removed but pre-op test showed they had gallstones.

Check with your surgeon to see why but it is not uncommon,

Good luck on your WLS journey,

 Saundra,
Thanks for that!  I actually received a call from my surgeon shortly after the surgery center informed me of the schedule to remove gall bladder.  He was calling to let me know that testing had indicated the presence of stones and taking it out now is the best option.  So--I'll be less some stomach and a gall bladder Monday afternoon.  Yay me!

Lots that have had WLS have had their gall bladder removed.   Seems that they go bad lots of the time after WLS not sure if it is associated with being overweight and then loosing weight rapidly or not.   Mine was removed at 4 yrs. post op.    Mine wasn't functioning properly and I was getting sick every time I ate food.    My surgeon like Saundras doesn't remove them unless it is necessary.

Hugs and blessings ~~~ Vivian

ROSE-I'm glad your doc is taking your GB out, during your WLS. It will save you time, pain and $$, down the road..

The "simple" explanation, as I know it (30+ yr nurse here):

Rapid wt loss..of any means..causes a rise in the uric acid levels, which leads to STONES..gall stones..kidney stones..gout..Gall Bladder dysfunction very, very common after weight loss..so obviously..is common after WLS..

In some states, it is illegal to remove a "healthy" organ, so your doc was wise to check your GB ahead and time and deem it "unhealthy". he's doing you a favor. The recovery time shouldn't be any different, and you won't be able to tell the difference in your body, since EVERYTHING will feel DIFFERENT, for awhile anyway!

Keep those questions coming, girl! We have been where you are, and are here to help and support you !!

Gina, you are precious, and you look great, too!  I noticed you are from Joshua--a mere 2 hours from me!    I appreciate all the support of this forum.  Thank you for your insight into the gall bladder situation.  Maybe I'll go ahead and thank him for removing it while he's "in the neighborhood."
