Comparative by Nature
Are We Losing Our Main Focus?
By Jessica M.
There are things in this life that we compare ourselves to by human nature. We compare our clothes, cars, jobs, families, and where we are in life to others. Some measure our successes and failures based on what others say. Wonder why this is. Who is to say that the ones we compare ourselves to is right, and who is to say we are wrong? What is right and wrong when we are all individuals and are all on our own journey in this life?
I picked this topic Comparative by Nature to write about today because it seems though that is a struggle that I have had for many years, if not most of my life. I was not just comparing your typical comparatives, but everything. Still struggle with this notion today, but there are moments were it gets easier to remember that I am who I am because that is who God wants me to be. As my relationship with God grows, my understanding of this topic is easier.
By no means, am I perfect or have all the answers; but I better understanding of why I do the things I do. Through my own personal struggles with constantly comparing and striving to achieve the unattainable, unrealistic goals of others I hope to bring some insight to this topic.
It is when you put down the comparing that we fully live our lives for who we are. The other day I was on the obesityhelp.com website, Texas Message Board, and came across the post that Stephanie G, created, “Positive Story". The post was about weight loss and sharing our story about where we were pre-surgery to post-surgery. It was in reading the post that I had this “light bulb" moment. Reading everyone’s before and after: weight and clothes size; and current stats that I realized that we cannot compare ourselves to others. One who weighed 155lbs today and wore a size 10; and another who weighed 180 and wore a size 10- its comparing apples to oranges. However, our addiction (and yes, we all have it here on this site with food) wants us to remain in this constant cycle of comparing ourselves to others. Maybe that is why so many people leave the site, or losing friendships, relationships with others. It’s running a marathon before training. We all want to achieve our list of comparisons before committing to relationships, and etc.
I challenge each one of you to stop, look at the things in your life and on your to do list and see if you are doing things for you, or because it’s something that you have compared yourself to another and thought that was the best thing for you. Is it really for you?
I know for me this is just the beginning… To stop comparing myself or justifying things based on the scale, size in my pants, and others. To bring to light that this journey we are on is not easy, we struggle just like everyone else and this is not a “quick" fix in fact, it’s a harder fix to the underlying issues that we struggle with. I hope to bring voice to our stories, struggles, fears and comparative by nature to others! I welcome your stories to include!
