Iron Question

Okay -  I've been boycotting this..........I know -  MY BAD !!           I hate even thinking about taking additional IRON and so far -  so good...........but.................my iron levels are okay and the docs are NOT concerned but have mentioned that it may be a little on the lower side............so - they ve advised me to start taking an iron suppliment cuz I know what they did to me during pregnancy.........but I don't want to be sick during the summer or after..........so I need to get off of my bandwagon and suck it up.............I'm taking everything else - so why not !!  lol

I HATE TAKING PILLS AND THE GULPS OF WATER THAT THEY TAKE..........SO  I'm gonna try ordering the new chewable......from Bariatric Advtg...........choc raspberry to TRY out.........

anyway - .....in the meantime.............

Is there differnt types of iron out there.........is one better for US than the other (like calcium citrate - vs calcius carbonate)  - etc.............if not -  I guess I'll just get a bottle and start in and see if it helps me.................

I've been really pale for 2-3 months ................but no anemia yet...............

I took the Bariatric Advantage chewable iron with vitamin C in it. I was told by the dietician at the pre-op for my surgery that the iron needs to be elemental iron (ferrous fumarate). I have since switched to a different brand of iron but I did not have any trouble with the Bariatric Advantage just do not like having to order something and it taking a few days to arrive. Plus, I save a lot money by not having to pay shipping. I am sure someone with more experience than me will respond with better words of wisdom.  I myself need to stay up with my calcium but tend not to all the time. Taking our vitamins can be a real battle but something that is necessary for our health.  Keep up the hard work and I will too.

Yes there are several types of iron ~~carbonyl is the easiest for us to absorp with fewest side affects. I have some of the BA chewable (I think grape, I don't like them, yuck).

Definitely start taking the iron if you are low with chewable Vit C, better to prevent the dig your way back up.

I was looking for a blog post from Andrea but couldn't find it to share, she had a good blog on the types, etc. I've sent her a message to link me to it so I can share with you, when I get it I'll be sure to post it here.

Edit: Here's the link, there is lots of information on iron Andrea condensed this one very well and specifically to help WLS patients.

Phyllis like Dana said better to get in under control now you dont want to get iron ifusions..... 6 hours of sitting there with an i.v.  since i havent had insurance for almost a year i havent had blood work done and i know once i do get insurance i will be back on infusions....

please take your iron... dana and several others have great posts about what to take with/without certain vitamins.... honestly i cant remember much and that i know if from a lack of vitamins for years since i felt great.... dont wait till you are 5 years out and the labs come back bad....

i know this will open a can of worms but most of you guys know what i have been through from not taking my vitamins.... memory loss and dizzyness daily really suck.... but i have to put my 2 cents in...guess tonight was a night of alot of 2 cent posts....lol..

we talked about this tonight at the pasadena support group really great discussion so many new people there... i know the first few years you are feeling great and looking great and think you dont need to take the vitamins and then it goes down hill.....
