Okay guys... Of course I have experienced the normal generic looser skin EVERYwhere including my face, and it's driving me nuts, but I've noticed some recent changes to my face that I wasn't expecting, and have never heard of...

I've always had normal skin, and for some reason, now my nose especially, seems oily and shiny all the time? Did anyone have something similar to this happen? Is this NORMAL? Also, I think my skin color on my face is getting LIGHTER! My mineral powder which was previously a perfect shade for me now makes my face look orange. WTH?

Maybe I'm just a head case... LOL.

Just wanted to see if anyone else had been there, done that, and if it was anything to be concerned about. Just seems weird to me!

My skin got DRIER after surgery and this winter was especially bad so I kept the lotion going all the time.  The worst was my dry scalp flaking and itching and looking like dandruff, but I fixed that with a mayonnaise treatment.  Now that the humidity has come back I am ok.

Can't help you with the lighter skin tones - I haven't experienced that or seen it posted on the board before.

I haven't noticed any changes in the tone of my skin, it's just more wrinkled and has gotten a lot drier.  I've always had dry skin but geez I don't want alligator skin.

Honey, hormones may have something to do with it too! You store hormones in fat(this isn't ironclad, just what I have heard) So the changes in skin may be because you do not have the hormonal stores you use to have! My face now breaks out all the time and I think it is more of an age/hormonal thing than an actual weight loss thing. One of the nurses might have a better answer. As far as skin coloring goes no change there for me.I am still just as pasty white as ever!!

I think you're just a NUTCASE, lol.  My skin is MUCH drier but other than that, no changes.  My skin is always lighter in the winter just due to lack of sun so my make-up is always different from winter to spring/summer.

I'm a cosmetologist (currently a SAHM) who specializes in skin care, so let me ask a few questions before I go into tons of details that don't matter to anyone other than me.

1. Have you recently changed anything in your skin care regimen within the last 6 months?

2. New shampoo/conditioners?

3. What skin care products do you use (cleansers, toners, moisturizers, make-up)?

4. What is your daily (and weekly) regimen?

5. What have you always found to be true (oily T zone/dry cheeks, dry skin overall, etc)

Let me know these things and I'll see what I can do to help!

Thank u all. Steph, I agree, I'm a nutcase!!!!

Jenn, I'll answer this the best I can ..........
1. No...sadly, my skincare regimen is usually just an oxi pad to help clean the makeup off and the eye make up remover. I've played a bit with the garnier makeup cleansing cloths/moisturizing for 2 wks or so though...

2. I was using the nioxin shampoo an condition jan-march, now we are using the new Dove shampoo and conditioner.

3.  Garnier cleansing cloths, an olay moisturizer....oxy pads.

4. Nightly I clean off my makeup and wash my face with my makeup wipes... I also put on the olay moisturizer.

5. I always had normal skin, and would very rarely even have a break out. Now my skin is super sensitive. Shiny nose, zits popping up here and there...

Ok. Lets talk this through.

So you usually use only an Oxy pad to clean your face. And you've just recently changed to Garnier for the last two weeks, correct? If this is the case, I'd jump on saying this is the likely culprit but it might not be. We've also got the variable of going from from Nioxin to Dove. Depending on which product of either brand you're using for your haircare, some are going to have more nutrient-rich agents versus moisturizing agents (to cover the range of hair types). If you're using any kind of moisturizing shampoo/conditioner, it's going to impact your skin. I'm thinking it's more of your skin care regimen though. Lets talk about that.

Now, if I'm understanding you correctly, you usually only use a Oxy pad to clean your face and have for a while (?). Oxy Pads (or Garnier daily purifying pads) are designed to treat acne prone skin, or skin that is more oily than normal. It contains salicylic acid, and if you don't really have excess oily skin but more normal skin, what you may be doing is over drying the normal skin you DO have, causing the sebaceous glands to overproduce sebum (oil) which is leading to excessive oily skin and breakouts. That's why it's completely possible for people with oily skin to have dry skin as well (and should moisturize with a non oil based moisturizer). The oil glands are sensitive and if they feel dehydrated at all, they'll produce more. If a person is already overproducing oil then it becomes a big problem. What I think you might be doing is purifying your skin too much, causing a bigger problem.

If you've always had normal to dry skin, then lets get back to square one. Lose any product designed to "purify" "treat" or "deep clean". It's overkill for a good chunk of people on a daily basis. Go back to normal skin products. Use anything designed to be gentle on the skin - even use sensitive skin products right now until your face finds a happy medium again. You will likely break out in pimples (one pimple takes 30 days to come out from the conception of it. So whatever you do today, will impact your face in a month. Always keep that in mind.)

Wash your face every night with gentle upward motion and don't press too hard on the oily parts (causing the production of more sebum). If your cleansing cloth gets very dirty after half a face, throw it away and get another one. The idea is to clean the skin thoroughly, and not leave stuff behind. If you have a toner, use one. If you don't have a toner, get one. It tightens pores and removes any residue on the face (including soap scum) making it nice and clean before moisturizing. DON'T pick an astringent toner. Something easy for the face to handle. I believe Neutrogena makes a calming type of toner for the face. Please don't pick anything that's going to strip delicate moisture from your face. Now when you're done cleansing and toning, moisturize. Nightly you can use something that is going to work on preventing wrinkles and adding hydration, etc. Daily you can use a normal moisturizer with SPF. You're going to want to wash your face morning and night. Think about all those microscopic little pore cloggers floating on top of your pillowcase. Yum! Definitely wash your face in the morning.

Anyway. Until you get a handle on what's really causing your oily skin, I think you need to stay away from anything that treats oily skin. I know that doesn't make sense, but a good handful of people I've worked with have actually though they were treating the problem, and they were causing the problem. Treat your skin like normal and see how it works for a while. You've got at least a month until you see if it works.

Best of luck to you!

Jenny

my skin changed about the same time as my RNY but I think it was mostly due to my being 52, post-hyserectomy, and stressed out the wazooo!! Anyhow, before my life was changed by Dr. Spivak, I didn't really care much about skin care, I was fat and didn't work at jobs that made it necessary to "fix up" (kennels and newspaper routes), and I was just too lazy to do all the steps my mother said I should. Post RNY I have had some life changes that DO require fixing myself up more and I had no clue where to start so I went to a Clinique counter with my daughter and got a makeover. Those ladies asked a million questions and made lots of suggestions and made me look pretty good so bought most of their stuff, but my daughter had to be more cost conscious so she asked for lower cost alternatives, which they gave her, mostly Aveeno, Nutrogena, and Almay, we both have extemely sensitive skin. You might do this too, I'm sure Jen can recommend some good products or a good product line for you. Your life has changed, so you'll have to adjust, start using other stuff, enjoying more "girlie" life style, at least that's the way I look at it. For once in my life, I feel girlie, at 55 years old. My husband is amazed that I wear the occasional dress or skirt, wear makeup, and actually look at my hair before going out. Of course, I still garden, work my dog, want to take martial arts classes, but underneath I'm a reborn girl!! Yippee!!!
