Routine Bone Density

I am just checking... has everyone but me had a routine bone density after RYGB?  I didn't even know that this was a routine test until I saw it on a list of yearly tests that we should be getting.  Is there anyone else out there that didn't know we needed these?

I've seen that listed, but have to admit I haven't had one done yet.

I am going to see my surgeon for a follow-up tomorrow.  I am going to ask him to order one.  I have lost 2 inches in height since my RNY... so I really need to have it done. I am glad to know that I am not the only one that hasn't had one.

Since my mother was diagnosed with bone cancer late last year, this is one of the tests that was discussed when I went in for my labs.  My PCP wants to see my lab results before we decided whether or not we need to proceed with it though....

I also asked about it and he suggested between years 3-5 having one done,  but it's not a 'normal' test and some insurance companies won't cover, so check coverage first (what I've been told)...

I was fortunate enough to have one before RNY as a baseline since I was post-menopausal.  And I also had one at one-year our which was covered by insurance because of my age and it showed no loss.  But neither was related to my RNY surgery so I can't answer your quesiton.  The firts one was ordered by my OB-GYN and the second by my PCP, not WLS doctor.

Kim......I had one last year for the first time at almost 4 yrs post op.   Everything was fine.   To be honest the only reason I had it done is because both my parents had Osteperous.   I didn't want it.    It is really a nothing test to worry about.   Unless you are having problems that is.
