Latest on my Mom

Well three doctors later and we are home.  I have lots of information so please bare with me.  Our first appointment was with a Thorasic Surgeon.  He was wonderful.  He suggested radiation for the pain Mom is having in her shoulder and arm.  We have an appointment with the Radiologist tomorrow morning to set up treatment plans.  It should only be 5 to 12 treaments and like I said it is only to help with the pain.  He also said that the limph nodes are active in her wind pipe but are not pressing on the tubes so that is a good thing.  We talked about her having a hard time swolloing the vicadin and being woken up in the night with pain.  So he has changed the medication to a liquid.  We asked about a time released medication but he wants to start with the liquid to see where her pain level is at then talk about somethig different when we go back to see him in a couple of weeks. He also talked about working with a team of other doctors from around the area and some from Boston.  What they do is get together and discuss differernt treaments for different people with Lung Cancer.  He was going to present Mom's case when they meet again on the 13th.    From there we went to see the Oncologist who is the same Dr. we started with.  He agreed with the radiation.  We talked about Chemo and after the radiation has started we will talk about it with him again.  He also showed us the pet scan tht was done.  Thank God it had not gone anywhere else.  He was able to show us where the tumor was and how much of the lining of the lung was affected.  He explained that what we were looking at was little small tumors all over the ouside wall of her lung.  It was a positive thing it had not spread also the MIR done of her brain should nothing (well she has brains but we knew that anyway). We have an appointment with him in two weeks and by that time we should know how the radiation is going.  He gave her a B-12 shot because if she decides to go with Chemo it depleats the B-12 in hr body.  Anyway from that doctor we went and saw the doctor that put the port in to drain the lung to have a stich removed.  He said the site looked great but by looking at the pet scan he could see that there was about 500 CC's in there and that the VNA when they come tomorrow should drain it and try and get most of it.  He gave Mom some instructions that will make it easier for the VNA to get most of the fluid.  So that is where we stand now.  Mom is in good spirits and I think is willing to try the Chemo and see how well she tolerates it.  The Chemo itself is IV and done every three weeks.  They should know after two rounds weather or not she is going to tolerate it and if it is going to work.  Dad seems to be tolerating it well.  I think like the rest of us he is still in a little shock over the whole ordeal.  We are a family that will stick together to the very end and support Mom in whatever decisions she decides to make.  Please continue to pray for her, and if you would like to call, thats great.  If she is not up for phone calls we will let you know.  If you are close enough to visit thats great too but please call before you arrive.    Again thank you for all the love and prayers you are sending our way they are felt.  Lots of Love.  Michelle

WOW Michelle, it does sound like y'all have a lot on your plate and you're right, it is a lot to bear. It's going to be a fairly long process and you all will need a lot strength and perseverance to get through it.  You and Dad are going to have to make sure that you take care of yourselves while taking care of Mom, sounds like you guys are in for a long haul.  Will keep all you guys in my prayers!  Every little bit helps!

Lotsa hugs, Mari
