- Pease check out Dr. Connie Stapleton's Website. A lot of good information on there for all WLS patients regardless of the surgery you chose. Good luck to all and I'm here for you if you want to send me an email. I'll answer it as soon as possible.

I don't have the band but I absolutely CANNOT drink a soda if I even wanted to (and occasionally do as I miss them). It hurts so bad I just can't so it is not even an option. I kicked the diet Dr. Pepper habit 4 months before my surgery. I have even tried letting them sit out but any carbonation hurts so it would have to be completely flat and by then it just doesn't taste very good.
I know several people that their dr's have advised...that the reason their surgery failed and they had to have a revision was because they went back to sodas..............
that might not be true for every one - every kind of surgery..................but...................empty calories...

I've been researching and this is the best answer I can find:
Can I drink carbonated beverages after surgery?
Gastric Bypass.com - Frequently Asked Questions about Weight...
Many centers advise against this. But they will not harm you, or your operation. Many patients do find carbonated beverages uncomfortable, from the gas they produce. It is recommend that you avoid any flavored drinks between meals, such as diet soda, coffee and tea – use of these tends to activate your hunger mechanism. Why can’t I eat red meat after surgery? You can, but you will need to be very careful, and it is recommend that you avoid it for the first several months.~Stephanie~
RNY revision from lapband 7/30/07...TT/BL 10/9/08 and at GOAL
Medically speaking, since I have RNY, I can't comment on the band, but my doctor, and a few other doctors I have talked to, have said that the people who drink diet sodas don't lose as much wieght and gain back more wieght. There could be alot of reasons for this, but statistically, something about it works against wieghtloss. On a side note, caffeene is something that you should avoid, although most people don't and they survive. But Caffeene makes some vitamines less effective and can make you hungry and can dehydrate you. I have a hard time getting in enough water in a day, so I can't afford to drink things that don't count toward my water intake. I had RNY and I can't handle the carbonation, even 2 years out. I was a Coke Zero addict before my surgery, but I've been ok without it. When I really want one, I just look in the mirror and think that it is a small price to pay. I miss the Cherry and Vanilla Coke Zero more than any other thing I've given up. Now my sister had RNY and does drink carbonated things. It may be something that effects different people differently. I would expect from what I've seen in my friends with a band, that at some point you would be able to drink it, but you may not choose to.
