I was advised that I stay away from all soda after I had the band.  It is the carbonation that is the problem.  It can cause you to have a lot of discomfort.  Hope this helps!

Maybe you could let it sit opened in the fridge overnight - then it would be flat and OK to drink??

I do not have a band - so please don't take what I say as gospel. :-)

Several WLS buddies drink diet sodas ****asionally) and let them go flat first - that is why I suggested it.

Best bet is to ask your surgeon!!   Better safe than sorry. :-)

Instead of letting it get extremly flat...grab a large glass and fill it with ice, pour the d dr pepper and let it sit a few minutes to get a little watered down. I'm thinking this might not be the worst thing post surgery. However, I would wait a little longer to heal maybe since you are post op last week. This certainly is not a tried experiment from me so wait for a few more answers.
On the other hand congrats on being on da losers bench!!

I am an RNYer but there are 2 things you need to think about...carbonation will expand your pouch which is counter productive and can really be painful and 2) there was a study done about sodas and it was found that people who drink sodas snack more which is also counter productive!

Just something to think about!

Sorry meggie but I have to disagree.  I've looked high and low for research to PROVE that carbonation "expands your pouch" and haven't found any.  I also asked my doc (RNY ONLY) and he says they're fine after one month.  If anyone has any medical proof to the contrary, I'd love to see it.  HOWEVER, I do agree completely that they make you crave carbs which is not a good thing.

Proof I don't have, but my RNY doc said that carbonation expands with heat (body temp) and when we drink them they expand the pouch and threby the "drain" (lack of pyloris so it cannot shrink back up).

They don't mean that much to me so I didn't pursue.  Afterall, he has the degree.

Sorry, still not buying it.  Pour a Coke in a balloon and does it expand?  Nope.  Still looking for the proof...I've researched it extensively on the internet and can't find any proof...but I'm open to read any study anyone can find.  I'm certainly NOT recommending anyone go against their physician's advise, I'm just not buying the "expand the pouch" thing.

STEPH..crap..now you KNOW I'm gonna HAVE to go try this "science experiment"...seems like waste a good Diet Coke to me...I know a swig of DC will bloat me and make me belch, like a truck driver, but it doesn't "last", like a lifelong stretch thing, and I rarely drink them. mostly cuz they keep me from my water...I DO know REAL Coke will clean the crap off  car battery cables...awesome stuff....not sure the diet stuff has as much acid/carbonation
