No Sugar Added vs Sugar Free
Okay - I really feel silly asking this question...but here goes.
I was looking at a couple of items and one of them being what I thought was SugarFree Hot Chocolate that is provided here at work FREE..................
The label states NO SUGAR ADDED - so I'm thinking that is a good thing.........right ? WRONG...
80 Calories.......
9 GRAMS of Sugar................I didn't think there was sugar in it.............I haven't been drinking this at ALL because of the 9 grams of sugar in it.......(suppose to stay below 6 grams per serviing for me) - but then I got to thinking..............
What is the difference..............is there a difference.? When it says - DIET...does it really mean that ? DIET - low sugar........no sugar added......etc...

Look at the ingredients, sometimes point blank it will say sugar, sometimes it will say fructose or glucose or maltose, which are others forms of sugar.... if it doesn't say any of those but lists milk, then it's probably the natural lactose in milk.... it's still a form of sugar, but not processed sugar.... now whether or not you can handle lactose is another question entirely.....

I thought sugar free meant that the sugar was removed and replaced with something else. And then No Sugar Added was just that. It only has the original amount that is naturally there with nothing added to it. Now Low Sugar who knows what that means. LOL It's all very confusing to me to. I've seen things that are low sugar have more calories than regular items. I just try and read the labels to find out if I can eat it or not. Lately I haven't done well at that though. Could be why I have put on a few pounds.
no sugar added is very deceiving, to make you think it's good for you. If there is sugars naturally in the food, then there is still sugar, just not added corn syrup for fructose or whatever.
Just be careful and, like Karen says, look at the SUGAR area of the label. If say, the carbs are 10g and 9g sugar, then you know that the carbs come from sugar and it's a no go. Well it is to me.
If it's 80 calories, then find out the sugar grams. If it's like 10, then 40 of the 80 calories are sugar calories and that's 50%.. major no.

You also need to look at the other nutritional info when a product uses those terms. I was buying Hershey's Chocolate Sauce this weekend (I NEEDED some chocolate milk!!) and they had regular, sugar free, and lite. So I sat there and compared all of them. The SF and lite bumped the sodium WAY WAY up (I am non-surgery so I don't need to watch sugar but I am pregnant and bloating so I am watching salt.). And I think it was the SF that had an added column for sugar ALCOHOLS, which I know some of you have issues with.
The point of all of that was to say that my personal opinion is that all of those titles on foods are gimmicks. I need to read all of the NUT info on stuff to stay away from what I don't want no matter what the front of the package says!

That's exactly right. What they take away in sugar, they add either in fat or salt or something to compensate for the flavor.
My doctors have always said eat the REAL stuff. And if sugar is in it and you dump, then that's the alarm to NOT eat it. The sugar alcohols create hunger and you will eat more, so what good is it to go SF? Or going SF and eating twice as much..

this is the best description I've come across so far:"No sugar added" means that the food was not SUPPLEMENTED with additional sugar, but that all the original sugar is there. Think of applesauce - apples have some sugar already, but perhaps the maker added no additional sugar when making the applesauce.
"Sugar Free" means that ALL the sugar has been removed somehow, including what was in the original product. For things like diet sodas, it means that they didn't add any sugars to the other ingredients vs. corn syrup and other sugars normally added to sodas.
2 things to remember with sugar free, that's what is recommended for diabetics...

#2 these may cause a laxative effect in some ppl, so go easy. I've found the chocolate sugar free things will send me running to the bathroom if I go crazy.

BTW:Walmart sells a sugar free chocolate syrup I love to add to my coffee. A poor woman's mocha.

Phyllis, regardless of what it says everything has calories. I don't dump so I don't have to watch sugars (unless the quantity is high) but I'd never drink anything that had 80 calories per cup. I'd much rather EAT those 80 calories, than drink them. I read constantly about people that make SF cakes, breads, cookies etc and eat them like crazy. Generally they have to same amt of CALORIES as the non SF kind. When you cut sugar, you usually ADD fat so it all balances out in the end. You know the rule...IF IT TASTES GOOD-DON'T EAT IT, LOL!!!
