im 4years out, my WLS doc retired so my PCP does all my labs and its usually anywhere from 13-20vials.  You are surely missing getting something tested!

When I was born, I cried and the world rejoiced. Now i wanna live my  life so that when I die, the world cries and I rejoice

When you get your bloodwork, post your iron, B-12, vitamin D, ferritin, TIBC (total iron binding capacity), albumin and pre-albumin.  All of these can affect your energy levels.

How much iron and vitamin D do you take each day?  How many grams of protein do you get in a day?  The albumin and pre-albumin indicate your protein levels and low values are indicative of malnutrition.  Low B-12 can cause a whole host of side effects, including low energy and anemia.

From labtestsonline.org (excellent explanation of all your labwork):

The most common symptoms of iron deficiency anemia include:
  • Chronic fatigue/tiredness
  • Weakness
  • Dizziness
  • Headaches

I went thru tests and tests and tests for dizzieness.  No one ever officially diagnosed anything. And I gave tons of blood...enough to where at one sitting they had to get me crackers and juice. Still nothing.  I played with my food.  In the end after I took a very detailed journal to my RNY surgeon, turns out it is a form of dumping syndrom.  Remember everyone feels it differently and we all respond to different ingredients.  Fats and carbs (not just simple sugars, but all carbs) set me off.  If I eat pasta or bread I get dizzy and cannot stay awake.  I don't mean like I'm uncomfortable, but rather severe enough that I won't drive. High fats are even worse. So no fried foods for me either.  If you cannot get into your RNY surgeon right away, start keeping a detailed journal....foods, quantities, times...and reactions, rate the severity and note the time of onset and the time of recovery.  Take that to your next appointment.  And consider getting a referral for a registered dietician from your surgeon...make sure it's one who is familiar with RNY patients.

I never thought about it being a form of dumping.  I know recently I have had a bad reaction to pasta and I have been able to eat it since surgery but it isn't worth it.  I can't eat enough to really enjoy it anyway!  It's hard to describe, but I just don't feel right and kinda shaky.

I bet it may be more of a dumping/blood sugar combination.  Like Tawnya, combinations of salt, fat, carbs and such can wreak havoc on me too.  I get dizzy and sleepy.  Go back to more protein and veggies and little carbs and see if it makes a difference.  I'd ask the dr. for more extensive bloodwork and possibly glucose tolerance testing.

Log your food intake.  I do  the same thing with carbs and fats.  Stick to protein only for a few days and see if it improves.

What are you eating?  I don't have any answers at all, but when I read your post, it reminded me of my sister.  She is an administrator for a large agency in R.I. She has to eat low glycemic foods or she will fall asleep at work.   She conducts lots of meetings, and she said if she eats bread or potatoes or high glycemic "white" foods, she cannot stay awake.  If she eats those foods during the day she becomes very, very sleepy, but of course she cannot sleep.  I assume they have checked you for diabetes?  I am very interested to know what the problem is.  Good luck to you, and keep going to the doctor until you get an answer.

Good - sounds like you have a plan.  Tracking your food will help you see how many grams of protein you are getting in a day and also how many carbs.  I rarely eat any carbs before lunchtime, but that's me. If I started my day with some oatmeal or half a bagel I would feel like crap for hours.

Last patient I knew who used Scarborough said he discouraged protein drinks after the first few months and preferred his patients to get all of their protein from food.  That is fine IF YOU CAN.  I can't so I use protein shakes to supplement and I can tell when I slack off - my energy level falls.

Also if you are going to be tracking anyway - track your vitamins - they are as important as your food and could be a contributing factor.  What vitamins are you currently taking on a regular basis?
