houston area Dr recommendation please

Hello,
I am trying to find a good Dr for my niece to go see.  I am up here in Maryland and she is down in Texas in the Houston area.
She went to some "weight loss" clinic seminar that wanted $150 just to attend the seminar so she could see what it was all about.
I told her I would ask people on the forum for a recommendation.
I believe she is mostly interested in the Lap Band.
Any referrals would be absolutely wonderful.

I used Dr. Garth Davis and his seminar is free.  He is an excellent surgeon and I have had zero problems with my RNY.  It took me 17 months to reach my goal weight of 145 (from 248) but I am 51 years old.  He accepts most insurance - does she have insurance that covers WLS?

I will say he is not real sold on the Lapband, even though he covers it (and all WLS) in his seminar and performs the procedure.  His own sister has one.  He is also doing the VSG now which has good results and none of the mechanical issues with the band (erosion, slippage, etc).  I went to his seminar thinking I wanted the Lapband and came home researching RNY.

I agree! I've met Garth, and LOVE him. He is very personable and knowledgeable. Many on this board have used him with great results, and his father, Robert as well.

If you have cable, set your dvr to record an episode of Big Medicine on the Discovery Heatlh Chanel. This is their show, and you will really get to see their personalities.

Dr. Erik Wilson is highly regarded in Houston.  He does all WLS and has a free seminar, as well.

I hope your niece will research ALL weight loss surgery options before making her decision....then research doctors that perform the procedure she wants.  

All doctors do not perform all WLS....and they are not all equal in their abilities.

Hope she finds just what/who she needs!!

I went to Garth Davis and he is WONDERFUL!  When I went to him, he was out of Methodist Hospital in the medical center and now is at Memorial Herman on the North beltway.  He is my first choice.  I have heard good things about his follow-up programs too.  Someone who is recommended out of Methodist is my second choice.  I don't know the doctors at Methodist, but the weight loss department, counselors, nutritionists, groups are great.

I'm another totally satisfied Dr. Davis patient. I'll be seeing Dr. Garth tomorrow for my 6mo checkup. He, and his Dad, Robert, are both not only excellent surgeons they are compassionate and caring men. Dr. Robert did my husbands hernia surgery last August. Their support staff is also very good.

I am a very satisfied Dr. Robert Marvin patient.  He also has a free seminar.  I have referred 4 people to him and they are all very satisfied with he and his office staff as well.  Good luck to your niece.
