Any Texans Go Into Mexico For Surgery?

My surgery is next Tuesday, and I was not nervous in the least until I made the mistake of mentioning to family that we were taking a bus trip into Monterrey (didnt tell them why). And they all gave me an earful on how unsafe it is right now, and people are being killed, heads being chopped off etc etc, and now ... I am POOPING my pants scared!

I am not going to cancel this, I cant, Ive been waiting 5 years, I can finally afford to self pay in Mexico.  I need to know if anyone else took the bus trip from either Laredo or Mcallen through Reynosa and into Monterrey and what their experience was like. Is it as bad as they say, should I be nervous?

A friend of mine from Laredo was/is scheduled to arrive in Monterrey today but I havent heard from her, so you can imagine I am even more scared now.

Ugh someone people ease my nervous, I wont be able to sleep tonight.

 I know several who have had their surgeries in Mexico but not where you are going....but that doesn't mean your doctor is bad.    Also your friend that had surgery today probably hasn't had a chance to phone anyone yet.    If you check out the surgeon well and I am sure that you did I feel that you will probably be fine.    Now....Plastics....I would only have done here in the states but then again...that is me!!!

Oh im not worried about the surgeon in the list, Ive heard lots of good things from many patients and seen his youtube videos, its the state of Mexico itself that I am worried about. Apparently there is a war between the Mexican government and the drug cartel that is making travel into Mexico very unsafe.

I will be passing through a border town which are the worse because thats where they are trying to pass the dr*gs. Thats what I am worried about now. I havent heard of any buses being hijacked or anything and I would like to think that if it was really that bad the US would have banned any travel into Mexico but I havent heard of any of that so I want to tell myself its okay.

Monterey is a very cosmopolitan, large city, 150 or so miles from the border, so you should be relatively safe there .  

  At one time there was an "American community" in Monterey of ex-patriates that numbered around 100,000 or so, mostly retirees that were living like royalty there on their s.s. and other U.S. retirement by taking advantage of the low value of the peso at the time.    Not sure how many are still there these days ..

  Before leaving for there, you should check the U.S. Dept. of State's website for travel advisories, warnings and "bulletins" on Mexico, so you know just what to expect, what you should do and not do, etc.. to stay safe ..
