Home from hospital--- CLEAR liquids, need help!

I just got out of the hospital this afternoon from having a Hiatal Hernia repair surgery yesterday. Dr. Barker admitted me into Forest Park Medical Center on Thursday because I was unable to eat any food or drink any liquids for 24 hours. He was concerned that it was the hiatal hernia he repaired at the time of my surgery in 07 or a bowel obstruction. He went in on Friday morning for an exploratory laproscopic surgery, and while in repaired the hernia. He was glad that there was no obstruction.

I am on a clear liquid diet, and will have to follow up with him in a week. Just as if I had the gastric bypass surgery.

The question I have.... CLEAR liquid diet... Can I drink lean body on the go shakes?

I was not prepared for this and I cannot drive. Thank good for pain medication because I am hurting--- worse than the RYN surgery.

Any suggestion and advice on CLEAR liquid...
I have bullion cubes (chicken and beef)- no protein in it though
          sugar free jello
          sugar free popsicle
          crystal light

How can I get PROTEIN in and not be dehydrated??

Meggie, I sure will. I was in the hospital and the internal medicine doctor wanted me to eat regular food to see if it would go down before I could be discharged from the hospital. I told her tht I remember (in and out of anesthesia) them saying that I was on a clear liquid only. So, I refused to eat the regular food until I spoke with Dr. B o his staff. I cannot remember who came up but they were like absolutely NO solid food or mushy food. I was glad, because it hurts to drink just the 2 ozs of liquid. I did drink the Isopure Zero Carb stuff that they gave me in the hospital-- it was all liqud, the shakes I have are RTD thicker. IThanks for the reply  will do. I hope you are recovery well!!!

Usually clear liquids are the things you have listed at the bottom. How think is the protein shake? I'd stay on water, CL, S/F jello and popcicles and the bullion until you speak to Dr. B.

Sorry Jessica to hear you had to have surgery, hope the recovery goes well.

Dana,

Thanks for the recovery well wishes. I am grateful Dr. Barker had me come in right away, although he got upset with his reception (new girl) who answered the phone when I called and asked to leave a message with Dr. Barker concerning my conerns. She told me that 2.5 years out, this was not a bariatric problem and I should call my PCP. I was pretty shocked to hear that and asked her to leave a message with Dr. Barker to call me back or to advise. He called me back and admitted me via phone to Forest Park because he was concerned. Dr. Barker said, "you will always be my patient, and anything with the stomach and abdominal region will always be my concern". I was RELIEVED to hear that.

I will speak with them, but they were not worried about my protein intake at the hospital just fluid intake.

I will purchase the Isopure Plus Frost Grape drink they provided to me in the hospital it was pretty good.

Again, thanks for the well wishes.

I would say stick to what you're doing until you can check with your doctor's office.  I know we all aim for a certain amount of protein every day, but there are going to be times where it's just not possible.  Just make sure you get back on your regular amount of protein as soon as you can.

One thing--I'm thinking that maybe Isopure may be clear, but I've never tried it.  Maybe someone else could offer info on it.

Take care of yourself.

Thanks Stephanie for the advice! The isopure I will be buying. They did give me  bottle of that to sip on (2oz every 15 minutes). I will have purchase it. Having this surgery made me realize how much we do have to take care of ourselves! Thanks again.
