Overweight behaviors- QOTD

#1.  I always use a salad plate.  I've even got my husband down to a luncheon plate.
#2.  I don't eat at buffets and the only food I have sitting out is my fresh produce like onions, potatoes and apples.
#3.  I'm a very efficient eater and I've never been able to eat with chopsticks.
#4.  I will admit to still feeling the urge to clean my plate and feeling guilty when I don't, but I just can't do it any more.  I always get at least 2 meals from restaurant food or split a meal with my husband.
#5.  Chewing too little and too fast is still a problem for me, but if I don't chew, food gets stuck.  It happens at least once a week and I have to run to the bathroom and bring it up.
#6.  I don't eat at buffets ... most buffet food is disgusting and it's not worth the expense any more.
#7.  I never skip breakfast.  I have to eat pretty soon after I take my vitamins or I start to feel sick.

So that's not too bad.  I've mastered 4 of them do pretty well at 2 of them and I don't think there's any hope that I'm ever going to be a less "efficient" eater.

okay, i'm claimin it..

1. I do use small plates as long as they are available. I prefer small bowls

2. I don't eat while i'm looking at food. I prefer to have others fill their plates if it's a buffet and then I will get up and check it out.

3. I do prefer a spoon or salad fork. Have never try chopsticks

4.I want to be able to clean my plate but I stupidly fill way more on my plate now then I can ever eat.

5. It depends on the food but I got in a habit of OVERchewing when I had my stomach stapling so things wouldn't get stuck.

6.I do dive into the salad area because a salad bar with all the macaroni and potato salads is some of my favorite. Now it fills me up fast and I don't get much chance to go for the other food.

7. I do have breakfast every day. I should have it sooner than I do . Well, on Saturday and Sunday I do often skip or delay breakfast till late.

#1. Overweight people use larger plates.
I always eat off a salad plate and bought some small bowls after surgery that I still use.  When eating out, I use the bread plate or salad plate.  The few times I had to use a regular size plate it looked ridiculous.

#2. Overweight people eat while looking at food.
The only thing we have sitting out is anything my husband has baked and bread-y things aren't a big temptation to me (yet) because I can't eat very much.

#3. Overweight people eat with maximum efficiency.
Pre-op I could shovel it in!  No chopsticks for me, thank-you.

#4. Overweight people clean their plates.
Always cleaned my plate pre-op - not out of guilt or training but because I was hungry all the time.  Now, I just look at it as tomorrow's lunch.  Not worth the pain for "one more bite".

#5. Overweight people chew less.
I wolfed it down pre-op.  Was real good about it for a long time but get careless every now and then and pay the price.  Had habit for me to break!

#6. Overweight people dive in.
I usually circled the buffet table before taking a plate to make sure I didn't miss something good.  Haven't been to a buffet since surgery so I can't comment.  Oh - forgot about some of the work lunches (I'm too cheap to waste my own money on a buffet meal) Not the same variety, but I load up on the protein first and add a small amount of carbs so I don't do too bad.

#7. Overweight people skip breakfast.
I did this a lot pre-op.  Never skip it now or my blood sugar would crash.  Usually have a protein breakfast.

Why is it that we feel compelled to finish everything on our plates? I watch people leave food on their plates all the time, but if there is food on my plate, I feel almost compelled to eat it (unless it's gross).

I do remember my mom not letting me up from dinner unless I ate everything and I do remember her not letting us "skip" dinner if we were not hungry, but my siblings never had issues with obesity.

As for the behaviors, I do most of them, although now I take a lap around a buffet before I eat; and I always eat breakfast.

Scott,

I believe the reason many of us feel we need to finish our plates is the same reason you mention about your mom.  My parents were the same way, we were required to finish our meals before we could get up from the dinner table.  I honestly believe in my situation anyway is that my parents lived through a depression and they too were taught to never waste food.  You know the children in China are starving.

I never, ever force my boys to finish there plate.  I've even gone so far as to make or help them make their plate with small portions and should they want more we'll refill the plate.

Good One!

1) I always use smaller plates now unless eating out where you have no choice and I ask for a to-go box when they bring me the meal, if I'm not already sharing the plate

2) Frankly, I prefer to sit away from the buffett as people's behavor annoys me - it's like watching Survivor when you watch a buffett... Picture jungle cat stalking elk....

3) I like the challenge of chopsticks and eat with them whenever I can get away with it - it's like having the ability to play with your food!

4) I do tend to clean my plate these days, but then I actually KNOW how much to eat now...

5) I'm back to the bad habit of chewing less and need to start counting again so my brain can catch up to quantity I'm consuming...

6) Again, I don't like Buffett, but do look before I eat these days as my quantities are so limited; want to make sure I'm getting what I want to taste in one trip.

7) I eat breakfast, but it's very late since I just can't get food down early in the a.m. anymore...  Something since surgery.

#1. Overweight people use larger plates.  I prefer the saucer or small plate, when I go out I ask for a empty plate  as I usually share with the kids (and they have no problem with it and ordering things that "mom can have" and they ask before they order :)

#2. Overweight people eat while looking at food.   I look at the food and get sick to my stomach.  Makes me think about the past and OMG HOW did I do that before!!!

#3. Overweight people eat with maximum efficiency.   I love chopsticks... takes me forever to eat... when it's a lunch time outing with co-workers... I opt for my order to-go and enjoy my lunch from the to-go container WITH chopsticks. LOL
#4. Overweight people clean their plates.   Clean your plate?  The quote sticks in my head "clean your plate or no desert!"  Yeah I used to do that when I was younger, taught my kids to do so too.  NOW... if my kids clean their plate it irritates me if the leave food... I'm HAPPY cause they know the meaning of "I'm FULL"!

#5. Overweight people chew less.   I used to not chew very well... Now... I have to chew or otherwise I spend time in the ER where I don't want to be!  I learned my lesson ONCE before 6 months post-op... never again!

#6. Overweight people dive in.   I've never done this, but see it all to often anywhere I go.  Even when taking my kids to buffet's they would walk with me with plate in hand but knew that I didn't get anything on the first look at it... who knows... there may be something at the end that you want but you already filled up your plate so now that makes you want a second plate.  I'll opt for the wait and see =)

#7. Overweight people skip breakfast.   I've always encouraged breakfast... my kids don't walk out the door without something in their stomach... even if they plan to eat at school they have SOMETHING.  Mary has all to often gotten to school and said never mind I don't want to eat (at least she had a pop-tart or toast before walking out the door).

Thanks Stephanie for the EYE OPENER!  WOW... just to think about all that what we did and what we DO... my RNY was my LIFE CHANGER!
