Hi there!
Glad to find a 'local' group for information and support!
Doing lots of research - looking for a surgeon and seriously leaning towards the DS.
Anyone else here have the DS??
Been reading for hours....so am going to get some sleep - but I will be back tomorrow!
Any recommendations for surgeons here in Houston would be most appreciated! I found two that do the DS - Dr. Wilson and Dr. Ferrari.
Good night all!

Hi Julie!
Welcome to the TMB! Lots of good docs here in Houston (I'm out in Katy but my doc is in Houston). Dr. Wilson is a very good surgeon as I am sure Dr. Ferrari is but I know more about Dr. Wilson. I thought the two Davis doctors (my doc) had started doing DS as well but you may need to look into that. Both of those docs (father/son team) are fabulous. I see Dr. Garth Davis and his dad, Dr. Robert Davis, is a superb surgeon as well. I suggest calling their offices and attending their free seminars. I think it is nice to hear them and see for yourself who you might be more comfortable with and then go forward from there. I don't think you can ever do too much "homework" when it comes to your health and selecting the right doctor for YOU! Look at the doc, their aftercare program (in my opinion a MUST), what resources they have to help you (do you have full access to their nutritionists, exercise people, etc. when you have questions or need help with something), etc.
I'm going on 5 1/2 years post-op and actually just had my second round of plastic surgery so sitting here, in my recliner like I'm supposed to be doing, feet up...trying to behave! Kind of hard with three kids in my house all going in different directions but we make it work.
Good luck and again - welcome to the Texas Message Board!

Welcome Julie! Go with experience if your insurance pays for it. I've heard good things about both Dr. Wilson and Dr. Ferrari, neither are my surgeon but both have been doing WLS for a while. I'm not sure how many DS's either have done, find out from each how many and their complication rates. The DS is a harder surgery to perform, so definitely focus on experience.

Welcome Julie! I have no experience with the DS or with Houston docs, but I just wanted to welcome you to the TMB! Great folks here! There are several Houston Support Groups, so try to hook up with one that is close to your area! They aren't just for people that have already had surgery, but for those researching and learning as well. They are a wealth of knowledge and support and "been there done that" info!

Julie, I don't live in Houston suburbs any more but there are several that are hospital/surgeon run and a couple ran by individuals. What area of Houston do you live?
Sean has one that meets in Pasadena, there is the Katy Krew, one for sure in the medical center, one in The Woodlands area (Paige/Donna speak up) and Cy-Fair Hospital (Mary, Laura speak up as to the dates again please) has one too....these are the ones that come to mind immediately.

Julie,
If you end up going with Dr. Wilson, he has a formal support group meeting every month. I think it is the first Wednesday of each month down at Memorial Hermann but not 100% sure on that (day of the week that is). I know he has an informational seminar so you can always ask that. I also think he has "branch" meetings in different areas of Houston. They are structured meetings. Connie at Dr. Wilson's office can definitely give you all that information!
Good luck!

Welcome aboard Julie!
I am what you call a lurker mainly, but I chime in every now and again.
I am not a DS'er...I am a Lap-Bander. But my surgeon, Dr. Matthew St. Laurent in the Willowbrook/Cy-Fair area performs DS. He is a great surgeon and his staff and support system is awesome.
As for support groups......there are several around town that will welcome a newcomer. I know of the following meetings that meet each month and I attend each of them.
2nd Tuesday each month @ 7PM - Cy-Fair hospital in the doctor's lounge in the Professional building.
3rd Wednesday each month @ 6PM - Northeast Hospital (enter through the Endoscopy door)
3rd Thursday each month @ 6:30PM - Memorial Herman The Woodlands Hospital (meeting rooms behind the cafeteria)
Depending on where you live, hope to see you at one of the meetings.
