OT HELP Please! LONG.

Hi my longtime OH family,
I come to you today asking for any advice, suggestions or opnions.  My hub got bronchitis on the week of New Years Eve.  He would get the "cough from hell" (thats what I call it) but he would get very serious coughing attacks.  Well, he would pass out while getting these cough attacks. He would stop breathing, fall wherever he was and pass out. He would "come to" seconds later and be gasping for breath.  He would be very, very pale.  This happened a total of 4 times. We had gone to the Dr. and 2 days later we went to the ER because he passed out twice that day. That was the Wed. 12/30.  The last time he passed out was a week ago, so that was 5 times.  Today, this morning, he passed out again.

He only passes out when the cough attack hits him.  But these last two times, he is taking a bit longer to "come to".  And I mean seconds, but that still can't be good.

What REALLY sucks is that he has NO insurance.  He is on workmen's comp. I don't know what that covers.  We have a letter that says if workmen's comp won't cover then medicare takes over.  Does anyone know if workmen's comp is like insurance?

In my opinion I think its too many times for him to be passing out already.  This has NEVER happened before to him, but then again, in the 14 yrs i've been w/ him he had NEVER EVER gotten this sick.  I know we have several RN's here and I was just wondering if y'all had opinions and/or if anyone else had ever heard of this.  Im truly scared now.

Thank you all for your help, advice and support.

Monica....I wish I had the answers that you are looking for.    Truth is.....I have NO idea.    I would call the workman's comp and ask them if that is covered by them......I bet it isn't though.    BUt he DOES need to go to see a doctor or to the ER and I wouldn't put it off much longer.   It could be serious !!!  Prayers coming your way for you and your hubby.

Hugs and blessings ~~ Vivian

Vivian,
Thank you so much for your prayers.  We called and he shows he is still covered with BCBS. So we are taking that and running. I have scheduled an EKG for him tomorrow.  I hope we get some answers.

Hugs,
Monica

Hi Monica,

Okay, so I'm not a physician but I have gone through something similar.  Again, don't substitute any information I suggest for seein a doctor, but this might ease your mind a bit.   I hope he gets better real soon and will keep you in my prayers!

Toni,
Thank you so much. THIS is the word they first told us when we went to visit the Dr. And yes, reading it DID ease my mind...but we are going for an EKG tomorrow and and echo soon.  This sounds REALLY REALLY close to what "I" think it is too.  Thank you again for looking this up.

Take care,
Monica

I'm so glad you still have BCBS, it sounds to me like he may need to see a pulmonologist, or breathing doctor...

he needs to have his oxygen saturation tested over a 24 hour time frame to determine if he needs O2 in the home....

A pulmonary funtion test for tital and volume would be another idea to ask your Dr. for..

This is a very serious situation that you are describing...i hope and pray you can find a doctor that will give him good care...

your in my thoughts and prayers

Have him checked for whooping cough. If he's coughing that hard and in fits, that may be what it is. I had it really bad for about 10 weeks. It can take 12 weeks to completely kick it. I never coughed hard enough to pass out, but I did pull one of my respiratory muscles in the coughing fits and am still waiting on that to heal.

Good luck! I hope he's better soon.
Blessings, Jennifer

Monica - I work for a w/c insurance claims office..............

Work Comp will only pay for medical expenses  RELATED TO THE INJURY that was caused while he was on the job...............

Other "life" problems UNLESS doctor states that it was caused by the meds or something else from the work comp meds...etc................wouldn't normally be covered..........

SOUNDS LIKE ASTHMA TO ME...............EMPHASEMZA LIKE ?

He's passing out because he is NOT getting enough oxygen when coughing...breathing....he comes too - pale................airways are not clear...because of the bronicitis..

What did the ER doc do?    breathing treatments ?  etc.........should have maybe prescribed him an script for an inhaler ?       BRonchitis is nothing to mess with if you have asthma too.....  sounds like maybe going to pneumonia ?

Anything else you can help  you can call me if I can help w/ work comp questions...e.tc

glad someone else posted it because I was thinking it was a vasovagel response to the hard coughing too.  Hope the docs get it figured out quick!
