Danni, most of us had WLS with one goal in mind ~ to be healthy.  And you have reached that goal.  Honestly, the fact that you lost 215 pounds with the RNY is amazing.  And you may not be able to lose more without further surgical intervention.  That is not a failure on your part, but just the limitations of RNY.

My lowest weight was 135 and my goal was 140.  I stayed at 140 for two years before gaining nearly 20 pounds.  I am currently sitting at 150 and I'm not happy about it.  I've been there for two years.  I want to get back down to 140, but not bad enough to "diet" to get there.  So, I feel you on that.

Do sweat it.  You have done an amazing job, you are healthy, fit, and active.

I never thought about having reached the limit of my surgery - I did manage to get down to 195 ONE time before I got pg with Rach but it was NOT a healthy place for me mentally since that invlolved obsesivly working out for 5 and 6 and more hours every day. NOT someplace I need to be at any time in my life LOL

I have never heard anyone mention a limit of surgery - more information please - I wonder how many people that were extreemly MO and don't ever reach that "normal" bmi are in that place? making me think more this morning.

I do know that I have a good 20+ pounds of skin that if I had the funds could be removed

more thinking now

It's all about that magical window everyone talks about.  The most weight loss happens in the first 18-24 months.  After that, the malabsorption component of the RNY is very limited.

The small intestine have these little microscopic fingerlike projections called microvilli.  That is where absorption occurs.  100-150 cm of the small intestine is bypassed with RNY, hence the malabsorption.

The body adapts by increasing the diameter of the working small intestine, increasing the number of microvilli and the body's ability to absorb more calories.  This occurs about 24 months post op.

You are 4 years post op.  Your body is not going to malabsorb to the extent that it did immediately after surgery.  Any weight loss that happens at this point is going to be through dieting.

interesting - love the fact that i absorb cals but have to fight to keep my vit levels where they need to be - I figured I had to have adapted some simply b/c otherwise I would lose instead of maintain on what I normally eat - which is a lot compared to most wls peeps, not much to normal folks n perfectly aceptable to my naturally thin friends

I wish someone would write a book - all you never knew about wls and SHOULD have

thanks sharyn- as always you seem to have the knowledge needed in your pretty head

Carbohydrates and protein are absorbed by simple diffusion.  Most vitamins and minerals require a carrier protein.  It gets kinda complicated.

A book would be a good idea.

Danni, I think you have put into words what a lot of people need to hear.  Instead of worrying about the fact that you have stopped losing weight, look at what you have lost.  I am trying to get that way about my recent slight gain.  My doc wanted me at 220.  I got down to 210, but have not been able to stay there.  For the last month I have been around 223, with spikes up to 227.  But it isn't going any higher.  So, maybe, just maybe, my doc was right.  I should make peace with myself and settle on 220ish being the right weight for me.  Besides, that is easier than dieting to lose the 10 lbs.  LOL.

Thank you Danni.  Excellent post.

Good for you Danni!  I'm also working to be satisfied even with a little regain I'm a success.  With year 5 just around the corner, I have no complaints.

I have slacked on my vitamins and have dealt with lots of emotional crap later......I want to get that taken care of and LIVE.  I don't want to continue day in and day out to let my life revolve around WLS.  That isn't why I had this surgery, the mental games are quite challenging.

Danni...girl, you have come so far and have such a healthy lifestyle.  You try to constantly eat food that is good for you and you excercise a lot.

I never got down to my goal wt. and always said I was fine with it.  Now that I have put back on 20 lbs. or so, I'm NOT okay with it.  I at least need to get back to my lowest wt.  Don't even think that when Karla is losing 5 or 6 lb s. you should be.  It's the 2nd or 3rd time Karla has had to lose it!  Nothing I'm proud of for sure.  My niece is getting married in June and I want to look better than I would now in my dress.  I also have started feeling "fat" again and don't like the feeling.

You've got too much on your plate now to take on any more added stress unless you are ready for it.  Be happy with where you are and do what you need to do for DANNI!

Hey Girl!
I hear you! This last summer I started a new bc method and it caused me to gain 20lbs. I lost 10 of that and cannot get rid of the excess 10lbs. I also haven't been running 20-25 miles a week like I was this time last year either. I have a band- I could get a fill. I could go back to my regimental eating program. So many variables....   am I ok mentally with where I'm at? No! I don't know that I can or will ever be....do I get tired of it all?! You bet!

so my thought....  YOU GO GIRL! I truly wish I could be where you are at.

Love you!
