Bariatriceating.com has different sample packs you can purchase. The also have sample ("to go") packs of their powders Inspire which I just love.
At Nutrition Depot you can buy indivudal packs of some things as well as single bottles of the ready to drink.
I have gone into Smoothie King and they have had Syntha Six and Lean Dessert samples out.
There is a locally owned small store that I can go and get samples from.
Some of your big names like Syntha six and Nectar ect have sample packs you can purchase if you go to their website. And if you call them I am sure you can get someof them to send you some. I know that Bariatric Advantage will send samples of their protein for free if you contact them.
I have been to a few health fairs and have gotten some from Vitamin Shoppe so you may inquire with them and GNC. I think they have them if you ask for them.
Hope this helps!!!!

PamT has a good list of websites to order samples from....

you can order single packs from Click at drinkclick.com now. They have chocolate espresso and now vanilla. I really like the chocolate.....You can also check with syntrax to see if they are still selling single servings of their flavors. It was 11 packs for $9.99 plus shipping or something like that. There was almost 1 pack of each flavor. This is also called "Nectar".......it is much better to find out you don't like a $2 packet than a $40 tub! :) If you like chocolate and you like coffee, you will love Click. It does have some sugar in it but I just use 1 scoop at a time to make like hot mocha......

What I found out late in the game (from someone on this board, natch) is that Vitamin Shoppe will accept returns of the tubs of protein powders you don't like, just because you didn't like them. That should take away some of the fear of trying new ones. Wish I had known that from Day 1.
I also found out that protein drinks are MUCH more palatable if you make them in a blender or Magic Bullet with 1 scoop of protein powder, 1/2 to 1 cup of milk or soymilk, and about a cup of ice. The ice, for me, is crucial in taking away the protein-y taste and smell. The Magic Bullet makes it so easy and convenient to make protein shakes that it should be required equipment for post-ops. It's much faster to use and clean up than a blender and takes up less counter space. I now buy one of the cheapest, most generic protein powders they sell at Vitamin Shoppe (Dymatize Elite) and it becomes delicious, with ice, in the Magic Bullet.
I know where you are coming from. Protein drinks, puddings, etc., prepared according to package directions, were so gross that they drove me to despair when I was newly post-op. Now I actually look forward to my protein shake every morning.

I didn't know Dymatize was cheapest, but I do know the chocolate Dymatize I had was every good. I used it for the Chocolate Click Shake (1 scoop chocolate and 1 scoop Click) but I usually just do 1/2 recipe. I bought my bullet last year at Christmas and have not even opened it yet. I have an Oster that has a single drink attachment and it works really well. I want to get the bullet out but am trying to really clear counter space. Once I get it out, it will be on the counter 24/7. How ya doing there?!

I don't know that Dymatize is THE cheapest, but it is less expensive than a lot of them. I've tried the Cafe Mocha -- good, but a little sweet for me -- and the vanilla.
I now just use the vanilla all the time, made with ice, unsweetened soymilk, and about 1/3 cup of coffee concentrate that I keep in the fridge. Yum, and not too sweet. Here is how I make the coffee concentrate: http://www.toddycafe.com/ Highly recommend it, both for the daily shakes and to make regular coffee.
You are going to love the Bullet. Very small counter footprint. I agree ... kitchen-counter real estate is VERY valuable.
