Taking a fashion poll
I think you nailed it right there! Yes they were comfortable with you being the obese person and for some obnoxious reason they felt superior to you and didn't feel threatened by others.
This does happen believe it or not......you are now looking much better, showing your self-confidence and their superiority is being questioned. In essence, they see you as a threat now.

Unknown to me what type of legal work you do but if you were just going to be in the office you look fine. Permit me to be a sexist ***** for a minute and say that if you were in court with a male judge and an all male jury the short skirt might not be such a bad idea!
Never, and I mean NEVER, trust a fart!!
Thanks for your thoughts, everybody. I do feel better about the outfit. Even my 66-year-old mother, who is always brutally honest with me, agreed with most of you that the skirt was (a) cute and (b) appropriate.
I really do think my co-workers are having a hard time adjusting to the more stylish me.
They're just going to have to get used to it! I refuse to stay in the box they are comfortable seeing me in. And I've got to stop letting them do a number on me like they did yesterday.

First of all let me say you look FABULOUS in that outfit! And look at those collar bones !!!
I think it looks fine for a law office and agree if you were going to court that more conservative dress would be appropriate.
I have a similar issue in that I started work here at age 28 a little bit larger than I am now and the first woman engineer (and still the only after nearly 23 years) here at this small plant. I spent my whole career hiding my figure so I would be taken seriously as an engineer. Then when I got fat I was hiding my figure for a different reason LOL. I will be 51 next month and there is no longer any question about my technical abilities and I am not fat anymore so I have been dressing in tighter, more stylish clothes and it has definitely been noticed! I have gotten some off-the-wall comments but mostly they mean well and I smile and take it that way (even if they don't).

I have worked here for 15 years. Until this past year, I was never any smaller than a size 20. So my current appearance is a radical departure from the way my co-workers have always seen and thought of me.
We all get along very well. We know practically everything about each other. They're dedicated fashionistas and know that above-the-knee skirts are the norm right now. That's another reason I was so confused by this little incident and knew it could not have been all about the skirt!

Speaking as a manager for a large company I can say that there is nothing wrong with that outfit and frankly, they should be grateful you wore the skirt and not just the tights and boots with a top and jacket. Trust me, I've had a few folks do that recently that should not have left home without looking in the mirror first.
What you wore was fine and I wouldn't hesitate to share back with them that their comments were both unsolicited, forward and made you uncomfortable as well as being offensive in nature. Unless you have a published dress code stating the necesary length of skirts, there's nothing wrong with what you were wearing.

I think you look good and perfectly appropriete for an office. I have had very supportive co-workers, but my office is very casual, and most of my co-workers are much younger than me and wear things I wouldn't because of my age. So I'm lucky there. I don't see anything wrong with what you were wearing. You are probably right. They are probably uncomfortable because now that they can't just assume that whatever they wear, they will look better than at least one other person in the office. They are being forced to look at themselves and are afraid that they may now be the one that people think that way about. It's good for them to feel that way. Now that they are experiencing some insecurity, maybe they won't be so judgemental when they meet another large person or someone who isn't comfortable in trendy fashion. Enjoy the new look you have.
