HELP NEEDED....QUESTION ABOUT GALLBLADDER AND IRON !!!

 Morning Everyone,

I have a question for anyone who has needed to take Iron and have a bad gallbladder.   My gallbladder is coming out 1 week from tomorrow.   I was told last week that I needed to take 160 mgs of Iron a day for 3 months to get my levels back up ( they are just very slightly low ).   Anyway since I have taken the Iron....my gas problems have increased 100% !!!    I was in such intense pain yesterday that I just sat a cried for over a hour waiting for my gas x to kick in and work.   I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced this???   I looked up Iron on the internet and Iron can cause gas.    I am calling my surgeon tomorrow AM to see if I can discountinue the Iron till the gallbladder comes out.    I appreciate any and all feedback on this.    I know my gallbladder is causing gas but just thinking to myself that the iron is making it much worse.    Thanks guys...love ya !!!

I am not sure Vivian. An option might be to take the Gas X before you take the iron. I like the strips that dissolve in your mouth as they work quickly. Or you might ask about iron infusion as they might not upset things. I know they probably don't want to operate if your iron is low. I'd def call the surgeon and see.

Alissa.....it is Dr. Kim doing my gallbladder surgery and he is the one that wanted me to take the iron.   It is just a tiny bit low...nothing to worry about they said.   But I am in so much pain from gas it is unreal.   I am bloating so much I almost look PG and my pouch is so pissed off it is not even funny.   It has not done so much complaining to me since my RNY 4 yrs ago.   I am sure my surgery will go on as planned.    They just don't want my iron level to drop way low that is why they are having me take iron now.   I am not taking any iron today just to see if it gets better as of now i am in severe pain that comes and goes.    Thanks for the suggestion I will be calling Dr. KIm's office tomorrow AM.

Okay, this may be too much for a morning conversation...but here goes.

Iron will constipate most people very quickly.  Constipation can lead to gas pains too.  So, what I am wondering is if you upped your fiber intake (benefiber, whatever you like) maybe your gas pains would go away?  Of course, if you aren't constipated this might not work at all.  Just a thought.   Hope you feel better soon!

I am constipated all the time.   I take Miralax every morning and then since I have been taking iron I have started taking stool softeners everyday also.   I have upped them to 6 a day !!!!  The gas comes after I eat anything and after I take the iron.   I can't wait.  One more week and the gall bladder will be out !!!!

My money is on the SIX stool softeners a day-esp since this is something new-that's an awful lot, and enough to make anyone bloat up and have  "gas pains". Be sure to tell the doc EVERYTHING you're taking-don't leave anything out.

Everyone is different, of course, but I've been taking supplemental iron for nearly 8 years-pre and post menopause. I think my WLS surgeon was ahead of his time, nutrition wise-NOT to slam any other surgeon's protocals. Anemia is such a wide spread problem-even just right here on the TMB

Gina......the iron is "new" to me too.   I have not been taking iron for the last 4 yrs.   My surgeon does not require his patients who are not menstrating to take iron.   My levels aren;t bad just a tad lower than he likes.    I was taking less stool softners and they weren't working.    I stopped the iron and stool softners both yesterday and had one bad episode instead of dealing with it all day long.    I am going to call and trust me.....I do tell the doctor everything !!!  He can't help you if you don't tell them everything.    Thanks for  your advice.

If the iron is causing you problems now, it is gonna cause you problems later.  The gallbladder is irrelevant.

What form of iron are you taking???  Iron gluconate is less problematic than iron sulfate.

 Hi Sharyn,

We don't see you here much anymore.   We have missed you.   Not totally sure....it is bariatric advantage iron.    I just have some samples right now to see if they will work before I go out and buy a some.   That is what my surgeon said he wanted me to take.   He said I would probably only need to take it for 3 months to bring my level up.

The Bariatric Advantage Iron is carbonyl iron - 18 mg each tablet.

I could see cutting back on your iron once your levels are up, but not stopping it since you will be right back where you are now with low iron.  If you were getting enough iron in your diet you wouldn't have low iron now.  Have you not read Debra's posts on her adventures with low iron ?????
