Newbies & Lurkers - Slow Losers Unite!
Had a thought this morning and just wanted to share - hopefully this will inspire those who are worried they won't reach goal, are losing slower than others or just generally discouraged....
First, very brief background - I had RNY on 8/22/07 after 20 years of struggling with my weight and hitting a high of 313 lbs. Day of surgery I was at 290, in spite of working out for 2 years in a gym with a personal trainer....
After surgery I went through the normal healing process and began to lose weight. However, my loss was much slower than everyone else I read about and talked to. In fact, I felt like a loser and NOT in a good way... I ramped up my workouts and continued to work with a personal trainer when I could afford it.
At 1 year follow up, I still had about 40+ lbs. to lose to hit the doctor's goal and he was disappointed with my progress. To be honest, I couldn't figure out how I failed at WLS, but that is how I felt at the time.... So, I got over it and continued to stick with the program.
At 2 year follow up, he was thrilled to see how much of the 'excess' weight I had lost... In fact he told me he rarely saw such weight loss in year 2. He considered me a success! Well, I could have told him that!!
Fast forward a few more months to this week.... I have dropped another jean size and the scale moved down even more, inching closer to my goal weight.
Moral of the story - don't let anyone tell you the goal is unachieveable if you don't manage to hit it within one year time frame. YOU don't have an expiration date and as long as you continue to work the tool - the tool will continue to work you. Honeymoon phase is just that, but it doesn't mean your body is done losing just because you hit 3 months, 6 months or even 1 year out.
Good luck all in your journey!

Thank you Lisa for posting this. Newbies do have to realize that whatever WLS we chose to have done....it is just a tool and we determine the success or failure of it. Congrats on continued WL. You look amazing by the way. Hope you get to feeling better really soon !!!

You're more than welcome Jenn! That's why I posted. I wish I had read something like this when I was starting out as I quickly made friends with a few folks on the boards who outpaced me within 3 months... It wasn't their fault, but I felt like a loser and it was so discouraging to read about their success and know that I was no where near where they were.
All I really wanted to share was that our bodies lose in their own time and one person's time is really NOT anothers!
Good luck in your journey!
