Iron is low- recommendations

OK, so I got my nine month labs back. Doctor says that all is good (WOO HOO), I asked for a copy of the results to have for myself.  I keep a copy so that I can track it all myself also.  I noticed that my Iron count has been getting a little low.  I want to get a handle on this before it gets out of control.  I take a multi-vitamin 2 times a day, calcium 3-4 times a day and Vitamin B a few times a week.  I really don't want to add another pill to my daily regimen if I don't have to.

Since my doctor didn't mention it I guess he isn't too concerned about it.  I am still in the normal range, but at the lower end now.

Thanks in advance for any advise you can give me.

Thanks,
Chrissy

Just because your Dr. isn't concerned doesn't mean you shouldn't be. We read here, over and over, that folks are told their labs are just fine when in reality they are on the way to being tanked! Be proactive and make the corrections you need to now to raise your numbers instead of waiting until your Dr. is concerned and it's harder to get yur levels back where yu need them.

Chrissy.  You are right to be concerned about iron getting lower.  You may want to start taking additional iron tabs.  I do chewables that taste good from bariatric advantage.  I understand the not wanting to take more supplements, but most of us take a truckload.  It's about the only way to keep up your levels if you had a gastric bypass or any malabsorption type surgery.  You don't absorb all of what you take in.

One piece of advice from me: I was required to give my own blood before plastics.  My iron levels were fine until then.  They dropped and I have had to get iron shots periodically since then to keep my iron levels up.  It is best for bypass patients to never give blood after surgery for any reason.  It is difficult for us to raise our levels with foods high in iron.  It sure doesn't hurt to eat them but you would have to eat an entire cast iron skillet to get enough!

I did pretty well for a long time on Feosol (2x a day) ..  You can get them at Wal-Mart for about $8 a bottle (I think 40 pills).   It's carbonyl iron, which is one of the best absorbed forms.

I recently had a dip in my levels, so have switched to Vitalady's Tender Iron chewables (12 a day).  They are kinda bland tasting, but you get used to it.

Be sure, whichever ones you get, to not take within 2 hours of any calcium supps.,   Also do not take with dairy, coffee or tea, and take a Vit. C. with it to increase absorbability ..

 Yep . . it's a DS-thing,  MAYBE ..

I guess I'm really more worried about my hemo levels (hemocrit, hemoglobin, red blood cell count, etc.) which always seems to be right at minimum normal levels or just below, even as a pre-op ..    My actual serum iron level is within normal range, but I think by increasing my iron intake I can increase those levels too ..   Maybe that's wrong though ..  Anyone know?

I'm going to see if my hemo levels went up any at my next check, and if not then I might as well go back to the 2 a day Feosol I guess ..

Thanks to everyone for all the information.  I am getting some Iron supplements from my docs office this weekend, they are the bariatric advantage line.  I am hoping that when I have labs done again in 3 months that my Iron levels will be up a bit.

Thanks again!

Chrissy, if you also crave something crunchy - try adding 1 cup of dry cherrios daily to your food intake.  That has 30% of RDA iron and while it won't fix the problem because of malabsorption, it will help with your daily intake.   Also, for me it satisfies the desire to eat crunchy stuff without wrecking my food/calorie intake.

Good luck!
