OT - Question for Techno Nerds

When I got the axe at work on Friday, I had to turn in my "good" laptop.  We've got this Dell from Hell that was a cheap WalMart deal.

I'm looking to buy either another laptop or a netbook.

What are your thoughts on the netbooks?  I have a HUGE external hard drive, so storage space isn't really a concern for me.  I'm not a big online gamer, except a few of the Facebook games.

Any thoughts? Suggestions? Opinions?

I got a laptop for my sweetie last Christmas.  It was a 17" Toshiba.  I think it was just shy of $800 at Fry's.  He has been very happy with it and he is a programmer so his 'gear' is important to him.

We are looking at buying 2 of the little 10" netbooks for the kids for Christmas this year so if anyone has any input on them I'd be interested in reading what you have to say also.

I think the little Netbooks are SAWEEEET, just be sure the one you are looking at has all the APP's you want... ie Word, windows, Excel, etc... I love how small they are,  sure makes it a lot more convenient to travel with than the traditional size Laptops! Go for it! (And the price is pretty sweet too)

I love my HP netbook but it does have it's drawbacks. The major one is there's no DVD/CD drive but that's ok because I don'****ch movies on it and I have plenty of USB drives to save files on, although it has a good size HD. The keyboard is actually as easy to type on as my laptop. I bought it strictly for vacation to store my photos and start the processing stage if I get the time. My screen is 8" and it's really small if you plan to read alot. I catch myself holding it close to my chest and type and/maneuvering with one hand!  It'll never replace a laptop but if you need something small for traveling, it's perfect.

the little net books are so CUTE and everything but be warned if you're going to use them as your main computer you'll probably end up using them with a bigger monitor and keyboard (wired or wireless) just because they are so tiny to type and/or read on comfortably for extended periods of time....  I had a Dell from hell a few years back... not doing that again!  I've got an Ac er laptop that's a couple of years old and it's still cranking away without any major problems....
My DD has a HP that she just loves....  Guess all this didn't help much.... LOL

From my techno challenged mind.  I love my Toshiba.  So does Adam and Tom.  Tom wants me to buy a new one and give him mine!!!

he has a "Dell from Hell" and lusts after my speed.  I have a full size keyboard and 17" monitor, my next one will have a keypad!!

Well to be honest I would have said HP.  But in the one year that my dd has had her HP and it was not a cheapie.  The ac adaperter blew up and the motherboard just went out on it.  The mother board is going to cost close to $400 to replace.  Of course her machine was over $1000.  She also has an old dell that is still going until I get the other one fixed.

I keep going back to dell.  But the techies at work all say Mac is where they would go and get the windows mac edition put on it.

Those are my words of wisdom for what they are worth.

I love my HP.  It is 17".We bought it through Costco and when you do that, you get a additional year warranty on top of the standard 2 yr that they offer you. I actually had it in my back pack and must have put it down too hard on the ground and cracked the outer frame of the screen. We sent it off to them and they not only replaced the outer cover of the screen (without charging us)  they replaced the top of the key pad where I had worn off all the numbers from using the key pads too much. That was nice. It looked like brand new again.

Smile, it increases your face value.
