Question about Pre-Op Dieting..

I'm fairly new to this site but after reading several post I've noticed that many of you have to do a pre-op diet.

Dr. Marvin and his staff told me to not have anything to eat/drink after midnight the day before my surgery.  My surgery will be at the University General Hospital and there pre-op instructions state the same to not eat any solid foods or drink any liquids after midnight.

Just curios if you are doing it because your doctor said so or if you are doing it on your own.

My Dr. required a 2 week liquid diet before surgery to shrink my liver. The day before surgery was clear liquids only and I had to drink 1 bottle of magnesium citrate the clean everything out. No liquids after midnight except for small sip to take 2 RX meds.

You won't be able to have anything to drink after surgery until you pass your leak test. That's usually taken the morning of the day after surgery. Mine was around 10am on the 15th and I didn't have my leak test until around 9am on the 16th. In the meantime...nothing by mouth! One thing that saved me was some stuff called Oasis Moisturizing Mouthwa**** came in a 16oz bottle with a smaller 1oz spray bottle. It's got a glycerine base so it really lasts a long time. Plus it is minty fresh! I got it at CVS pharmacy. I still carry it in my purse to help with the Ketosis breath!

I am new as well. My surgery is this Friday and my surgeon only told me to eat a high protein and to limit the amount of carbs and fats I take in. The Nut recommended sugar free carnation drink mix for added protein. Dr. Beltre said the most important thing was to not eat or drink after midnight the day before my surgery. I also was worried as I see most people on here do a liquid diet. I have been drinking the carnation drink mix and eating lean meats. I have limited my carbs as fat intake as well.

Dr Marvin did my surgery in June.  I did not have to do a pre-op diet either.  His post-op instructions are great too.  He also does not do a leak test.  I was sipping broth that evening after surgery.  Good luck to you.  I love Dr Marvin and his staff.  Meagan is the bomb!

Megan is sweet. I've only been to his new office since August, but both times I have seen Megan and she has been super nice.

I had to do a 1 week liquid diet.  To me that was better than doing a cleansing. LOL  I would just say follow your doctors instructions.  All Surgeons are a little different.  He knows what will work best for you.

I will keep you in my prayers as your surgery approaches.  Keep coming here and we will help you as much as we can.
