Osteopenia & Muscle Aches...

Hello Group Friend!

For those of you who don't know me I am almost a year out and have lost 100 lbs even through all the million issues I had.  I go back for my yearly checkup in November and he will check a complete lab workup, so I'll know what viatmins I am lacking since I don't take many.

Once again I am looking to you all for some knowledge and help.  I had my bone density test last week and got the results in. They say I have osteopenia ... grrrrr ( May have been from the radiation treatments I had for my cancer back in 2004) They are considering putting me on Fosomax and told me to take 600 mg of calicium w/viatmin D.  I have sooooo much trouble with those big old horse pills!  Has anyone found a chewable or liquid that is just as good as the Caltrate they have recommended?

Next question, for months now I have been having a lot of back, shoulder, hip, and arm aches. I thought it was just from being out of shape and exercising again.  Now it bothers me so bad that I hate to ever lay down (since that is when it sets in). The mattress and box springs we have is a pillow top, it's firm and not but maybe 1-1/2 to 2 yrs old. I belive it is one of those Serta ones. My body aches the whole night to the point where I can't sleep and end up in tears at times! Once I get up and move around it doesn't hurt so bad.  Has anyone experienced anything like this or is it just ME!

I would appreciate any input or advise you might have

Your symptoms are calcium and vitamin D deficiency.  I just ordered and they are "ok" the Bariatric Advantage Calcium Citrate Lemon Flavored Chewy Bites.  They were on sale so the price wasn't too bad.  I'm chewing 6 per day, I wasn't doing real well on the Citracal I was taking, usually just 2 per day.  The hurting is due to Vitamin D, I bet your labs show a deficiency in D.  You want the Vitamin D3 25 Hydroxy lab test done, don't let them order D2 it isn't going to help you as a gastric bypass patient.

You can order large doses of Vitamin D3 from www.vitalady.com.  What you can get locally is 1000 iu at a time and with Vit D deficiency you.....will.....never....bring it up with a small dose.  And if your doctor orders a prescription it's probably not a dry form and you'll be wasting your money on it.  I take LARGE doses of D 50,000 IU 2-3 days per week and at least 10,000 IU the other days.  I saw my D drop 26 points in one year and I don't want to see that drop again on the next draw.

Good luck with your labs, it does sound like you will see some deficiencies with calcium and Vit D.  Get your labs, get copies and send them to Michelle ([email protected]) she will help you bring those deficiencies up.

Hey Dana!

Which brand of D3 do you use from Vitalady?  I see Biotech, Superior Source and Vitalady brands.  What is the difference in dry D3 and just regular D3?  I get my 10,000iu D3 behind the counter at a local drug store here. I dont see the word DRY on mine anywhere.  Am I defeating the purpose using what I am?

Thanks girl!

Terri, I use the Vitalady one but they are all dry D and all will work.  If yours doesn't say "dry" then it's fat soluable and we malabsorp fat to a degree, not sure how much.  It would be more benefit to you knowing you are absorbing what you need.  I strongly recommend a Dry form.

GNC has Dry D but it's 1,000 iu and would take LOTS to make up what you might need if you are taking 10,000 iu a day.  I've seen a GREAT improvement in bone pain since I started it in 2007, saw it drop again in 2009 so I've upped it again to see what will happen.

Your not taking any calcium now? As a "normal" woman you should be taking at least 1000 mgs a day....as a RNYer (in my opinion) because of malabsorbtion you should be taking at least double that. As a DSer, I shoot for 3000 mg a day. As for the D, do yourself a favor and follow the recommendation of the poster above...get the mega doses from vitalady. She (vitalady) suggests doing the 50,000 IUs everyday for a month and then retesting your D levels after you finished a full 30 days.

Okay, thanks ev1 for your thoughts.  I have moved my annual appointment up to next Thursday, so I will be getting my lab done tomorrow am.  I called and asked which D test they do and I was told it is a VitaminD25 Hydroxy Total...is that what I need to be getting???? Also, I asked the dr office if I could take the chewables or chews for my calcium and they said he prefers we not take anything but the big horse pill. Geeeeez...what do you guys think? My regular doctore called and is wanting me to take fosomax for the osteopenia.  I want to talk with my bariatric doctor about this, but would like your input on this also.  I really don't want to take any meds that are not necessary!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have heard there are some people that have side effects with that fosomax.

Once my lab is done I am going to try and get a copy so I can share my information with the Vitalady and others that can help me.  Do I ask the lab or the doctor for my copy?????
I'm tired of feeling like crap and hurting!  I should be on top of the world right now since I lost what I have!

Have a great day, talk again soon!

I would ask your doctor what is his reasoning behind the "horse pill" vs chewables because it seems like we would absorb chewables better than pills since pills are designed for "normal stomachs" with large retention times and lots of stomach acid to help them dissolve.

Also, my husband is a cancer survivor and has been diagnosed with osteopenia AND has had the muscle and joint pain since his treatment 5 years ago.  Until I got him to go to my WLS-friendly PCP none of his doctors had tested his vitamin D level, which was low.  I gave him a couple of my 50,000 D's from Vitalady to get him started then a couple of the 5,000 ones and now he is on 1,000 units a day.  I asked him last night about his joint pain after reading your post and he said it has definitely been better since taking the extra calcium and D.  I also give him 2 Citracal petites in the morning and 2 at night (800 total) which should be enough for him since he is a man and hasn't had WLS.

I hope you are feeling better soon!

Sarah
