OT - Wanna Be a "Medical Missionary" For A Week?
A friend of mine, who is a Hispanic nurse in AZ, just got back from a fun adventure in the Dominican Republic.
My friend volunteered to go on a medical missionary trip with "Somos Amigos", ("We Are Friends"), which is a volunteer medical service that provides medical, dental and nursing care in needy countries in Latin America.
In addition to helping the natives with their medical needs, the group had what sounded almost like a tourist vacation there in DR. They shopped and ate a lot, and took a lot of pics. They even partied a bit on their group bus, heading back to the airport at the end of hte week.
The DR is one of the better off Latin American countries as far as its standard of living, is a BEAUTIFUL country, and has a lot of friendly people. As you may know, it is also becoming one of the major desitations in the world for plastic surgery, due to the low cost and high quality there.
You don't have to be a medico to volunteer w. Somos. However, be prepared in that you may have to do a lot of walking in some of their villages.
