Houston people who have gone to Mexico

I do not currently have a PCP. I went to one in June for my headaches and all she did was quiz me about my diets and what I was going to do next and told me to have WLS (which, funny enough I was against at the time, but I did not know about VSG). Part of my discomfort had to do with the 3 interns looking on. I'm not into that.

ANYWAY. My question is this...can anyone recommend a good PCP that they use and that knows and has been supportive of their surgery in Mexico. I would like to have a doctor to follow up with but I don't want someone who's judgey about the Mexico thing.

Also, does anyone know of any good therapists that work with WLS patients. I feel it is very important for me to start seeing one before surgery and continue for a while afterward to help me deal with the emotional issues. I want this to be a total lifestyle change and I know the first year is very important. I don't want to have an unresolved issues to fall back into.

Andi,

Hello how are you?  Here is a physician referral service 713.222.CARE for Memorial Hermann. The other hospitals will have something similar.   They will help you walk through picking a doctor with your specifications.  My wife and I both use Ernest Bartimmo Phone: (713) 242-2222.  He is pretty awesome and is on the Texas Top 100 Doctors list and was a professor at the Baylor College of Medicine. He also has some female physicians on his staff if that is what you would prefer.

Study hard on the Mexico option. They might can recommend some US physicians they have worked with in the past.  I have heard from Dr. Davis that most US doctors do not want to provide aftercare for Mexican work for liability issues.  But I have a hard time believing any doctor would turn anyone away that needed help. Personally I would rather work with my HR department to provide coverage or get a job at a place that  provides insurance coverage for bariatric surgery before I went to Mexico as a last result.  I know Dr. Davis' office can help you with some names of places.

Take care!

Well I'm not having lap band so I'm not looking for an aftercare physician in that sense. I'm concerned about keeping up with my cholesterol, nutrition, etc.

Going to Mexico really doesn't worry me that much. Seeing the high numbers of people that go to various surgeons there and have great results. I certainly wouldn't go to a surgeon anywhere that didn't have a number of satisfied patients and a good reputation.

I am a full time college student, my insurance is through my father. They do have a policy exception for any WLS, but besides that many insurance polies that do cover RNY or Lapband do not cover VSG at this time. Cost is a factor I can't lie. If I can get the same level of quality, and I believe I can, then it doesn't make sense to finance an extra $5k. A difference of $1k maybe would get me to stay for the sheer fact of not having to travel anywhere. But I would not take a US surgeon who had done 30 VSGs over a Mexican surgeon that has done hundreds. I don't believe the training and skill of US surgeons is that different or superior to those in other countries. Hell, half our physicians in the US weren't educated here anyway!

So while I am not married to any particular surgeon at this time, I'm not ruling them out either. Thank you for your suggestions!

Bartimmo is a primary internal medicine type of doctor which is what you are asking about, just to be clear.

Surgeons.. that is a whole other ball game. Go to a couple of their seminars and find one you like.  You might have your father go talk to his HR department about it.  His company is the one who put that restriction on there.

Good luck!!!

You just missed the OH conference in Dallas where Dr. Alvarez from Mexico spoke.  I don't have any direct personal experience with him, but he has a good reputation and does the sleeve:
