OT: Used cars?
Does anyone know anyone (6 degrees of separation), that has a reliable used car for sale in the austin area? In NY they're called "station cars", you know...good enough to get you from point A to B (in NY the station, is the train station to NYC), maybe not pretty, but reliable.
Anyway I've been looking for 2 weeks, and haven't found anything (yes tried ebay and craigs list). It's insane what some people what for a used car...i looked at a 95 toyota avalon, the car had 251k miles (original tranny and engine) and the guy wanted over 2grand for it. Toyotas are good cars, but 250k on a tranny means it's going in the next few months.
Anyway thanks for your help.

Used cars have taken a huge jump upward in pricing since the cash for clunkers program. You may or may not know that all the cars that were traded in under the gubmints program had to destroyed taking them off the martket. Also people are holding on to cars longer in this economy and more are also buy used.
I would keep an eye on autotrader.com and cars.com and stick with Honda, Acura, and Toyata if you want major realibility but at a price or buy something off the radar which would be much cheaper. A older Ford Crown Vic owned by some little old lady with 30,0000 miles on it would be a great car and cheap cheap to fix. I actually did that and went off market and bought at V8 powered huge Ford Expedition when gas was $4.50 a gallon. The book on it was 16K and I got it for 9K because the dealer was desparate to get it off the lot. Now it is probably worth more than I paid for it.

yeah i'd prefer a 6 or small 8 cyl. I don't do a lot of driving and found that they run better then the 4 cyl.
Thanks for the advice. I did know the cars for cash for clunkers were destroyed. In NY you can still get a good car for less. I hate to say this, but I think it's because there are a lot more "lower income" people in texas then in NY that used cars are more money. It seems to transend to thrift stores too, I can't believe that thrift store prices. Extremely high for crap.

FYI for anyone that has tried the ebay route for cars...it's for the birds.
