iron makes me sick

Ok I need some help.  My iron pill is making me sick.  I have tried taking it in the morning, at night, and have started cutting it in half and nothing helps.  I get stomach cramps, flushing, heart racing, dirrahea (sp).  When I cut it in half, I take one half in the late evening and then about an hour later I take the other half.  The first half doesn't make me feel too bad, but the other half - blech.  I space out by B12, B1, multivitamin, and iron throughout the day, but nothing seems to help.  Does anybody have any suggestions?  The iron I take is the prescription strength Repliva.

Iron used to make me sick too until I started taking the iron that Vitalady "Michelle" sells.

I am not telling you that you have to buy from her, but hers is the only one that sat well with me.

It could not hurt to check it out.

I wish you well.

I had this problem too- I tried a bunch of different ones and then I tried Nature's Plus Chewable Iron with Vit C from The Vitamin Shoppe. It doesn't make me sick. I'd say just keep trying different ones until you find one that you can tolerate. That's what I had to do. Mine isn't very expensive so you might try it.

I take Vitalady's Tender Iron and don't have any stomach problems with it - other than it causes constipation so I take 2 colace's every morning to compensate.

Thanks for all the suggestions.  I am going to try a different brand.  I am diligent about my vitamins, but would rather feel good than sick when taking them.

This is a silly question probaby but are you taking it on an empty stomach?  Some still have problems (including me) but mostly as long as I make sure something like oatmeal or a small piece of bread like stuff.  I actually eat a tablespoon of plain raw oatmeal most times.  That might be nasty to some people but it finally stopped the problems I was having.  Good luck!  Bariatric Advantage is coming out with a new chewy bite (chocolate like) that I tasted at the ASMBS and it was heaven.  I don't know when or if it's available yet....it seems they were having problem with people eating too many at the place they were being manufactured!
hugs, Y

Thanks all for the advice.  I have tried all different times of the day and with and without food.  The "best" I have found is around 7 or 8 in the evening, taking 1/2 pill, and eating a little something with it.  Nothing I have tried is actually good, but this is the best as far as feeling the least side effects.  I did get some OTC feosol and have been taking that, but I noticed the Repliva has a LOT more iron in it than the feosol, so I am worried now that I am not getting enough.  I need to place a call to my doc and see what I can do. Hopefully they will say I can take the BA or vitalady's stuff.  I would love to have either the passion fruit or the chocolate.  They both sound yummy!
