I hope the old man will be ok. If he survived the initial histimine reaction he should be ok.
I can tell you from dealing with my own partially Africanized hive in my backyard that the bees are vicious in their attack and do not give up. I re-queened mine over a month ago and now it is gentle again. Bees only live about 6 weeks so they are constantly being replaced. Since the queens only mate once when you replace the queen all her brood will have the same genetics. I bought my queen from a non-African Honey Bee area (Kentucky).
As for mowing........ I do the mowing around my hives and always suit up.

SARAH-I'm not a beekeeper, of course, but I casually know the man in question. He is an elderly man, and did not always make the best judgement in decisions. The last I heard he was still listed in critical condition. My prayers go out for him.
