Using a Straw to Drink

At what point can you begin using a straw?

I am 5 weeks out and I am going to a Scrapbook Retreat this weekend and I want to be able to have a glass with a lid and straw so that I don't spill.

Also any suggestions from anyone on what food I could take that would be easy to fix and eat while there?

Thanks.

I was told no straws, ever. It introduces too much air.

However, I see WLS patients using straws all the time.

I have used a straw since about 4 weeks post op.  I know they never let you use a straw in the hospital after any kind of surgery because of swallowing air.  I think, once you're sitting upright and walking around, it's not so much of an issue.

First of all, I can't stand the way protein drinks smell and drinking them with a straw helps with that.  I find it much easier to get all my liquids down if I use a straw.  Many years ago when I was a Weigh****chers member, the leader told us that generally speaking, people who use straws drink more than people who don't.  My kids, who both worked their way through college in food-service and bars, confirm that.  So, if you're not having any problems with gas pains, use a straw if you want.  If it gives you a stomach ache, stop using it.

I am with you there.   I dont like to drink out of glasses at restaurants.  I am SO germaphobic.  The straw thing is going to be hard for me to accept.  It grosses me out to have to drink right out of a glass.  I would rather not drink at all.  sigh.

I was a few months out before I started drinking from a straw.  I drink mostly bottled water with crystal light so it wasn't too hard.  I'm with you on drinking out of a glass at a resturant.  I know they say you get more air through a straw but I have more gas trouble when I dont' use a straw.  I think you just need to be careful when you start using one and see how you react.

I would take some protein bars as snack.  Will you be eating out or cooking your own meals?  You might take cheese and deli meats.  I know at 5 weeks I wasn't eating too much so I am probably not the best at giving advice.LOL  I was afraid to try anything.

Thanks for the advice, I know I am scared that I have already stretched my stomach out, because it seems like I am eating a lot now.

They will be providing the meals there and I know the last time it went it wasn't very healthy meals.  I think I will take some lunchables, they will be easy to pack.

Thanks again for everyone advice.

I don't remember how far out I was before I started.  My surgeon never said "no".  He did say no initially but once I felt ok using one I could do so if I wished.

The thing to be careful of is the amount of air you take in which could cause your tummy to hurt.

I am 26 months out and have not used a straw in 3yrs! I did one time, swallowed too much fluid and air and felt like s$^# and couldn't quit burping! But that is just me!
For lunches and snacks get an insulated cooler and pack cheese, protein bars, lunch meat, sf pudding and jello, ready to drink protein drinks!
I have a small cooler/lunch box I carry daily, even if I am just doing errands!
