News from the doc - genetic mutation

I'm glad my OB decided to go ahead and do all the blood work and tests after my miscarriage.  Most doctors wait till you have several miscarriages before they check for anything.  It was only my first, but she wanted to check everything since I'll be 37 next month.  Turns out I'm positive for the genetic mutation MTHFR.  For those that haven't heard of it ****rtainly hadn't), its a mutation that interferes with folic acid.  So on top of my RNY limiting my folic acid absorption, my body already doesn't like absorbing it.  The way the nurse described it, the mutation also makes your body try to fight off the pregnancy.

So her treatment for this is to take 4mg of folic acid starting now, 1 baby aspirin a day starting now, a Lovenox shot weekly once I get a positive pg test through wk 38 and then switch to Heparin for the last two weeks of the pg till 1 week after.  I will be seeing my RNY surgeon on Monday and will be asking him about the aspirin, Lovenox and Heparin to make sure he's ok with all of that.

On a positive note, my HCG levels are going down.  We'll check them weekly now until they get to 0, and then I should start back to a normal cycle after that.  I am really glad that I've got a super proactive OB so we can get back to trying and having a kid.  We need another little Tank in the world!!  Thanks again for all your thoughts through this, I really honestly don't know what I'd do without my chosen family here.

Wow Debbi what an awesome doc you have cuz you're right most don't test for this until someone has had several miscarraiges.  Her treatment is exactly what my docs prescribe as well.  We see patients every week that come in for testing due to this disorder.  It's actually not all that rare and probably more docs should be testing for it.

Glad you have an answer and a new plan of action cuz you're right we need another little Tank running around.

I have it too Debbi...I have 2 babies but did lose 3. One of the babies that was genetically tested had a chromo rearrangement (kind of like trying to change a 5 dollar bill for 6 dollars) as well so I had two strikes against me. I never had the heparin shots but a friend did....( I believe it had something to do with being either **** ygous or heterozygous for  mthfr...(can't rememberall the details) But my friend and I both had babies post wls with it so now that they know they can treat you accordingly...good luck....and it is hadr to find anyone else with it I will say....I will try to refresh my memory so pm me if you want too....

I can vouch for her OB's awesomeness.

Deb, I'm so glad that you are getting the proactive treatment that you need, and that you're forging ahead. You're going to be a great mom, just not on your planned schedule.

Debbi, I'm not familiar with the genetic mutation but so happy to hear your OB is proactive and helping you deal with the situation now.

Best wishes, I agree a Tank baby is needed.

Debbie, I had no idea you had a miscarriage.  I am so sorry.  I lost my first child, a son, at 20 weeks and it is devastating.  I am so happy that the doctor is caring for  you so well so that you can go on to a healthy pregnancy someday.  I am praying for you, dearest!

PTL for a proactive OB. I can't imagine the heartache of multiple lost pregnancies before they decided to test- that seems so unfair.
I will pray for good news from your RNY surgeon and for your hormone levels to get where they need to be so you can start trying again.
BIG hugs to both you and Jeff...
